Just wondering if anyone changes the sog filter on the Thetford cassette and if so, do you do it monthly as recommended by Thetford. Does it really make any difference?

I change the carbon filter on the outside of the cassette locker every 12 months

Changed ours after 18 months, probably about 9 months actual travel. No difference. Had a SOG I fitted on a previous van. Didn't change the filter often. Did a good job and no smells outside the van ever.

Yippe a toilet thread.

If you don't change the filter you get a terrible ammonia smell outside the vehicle. The last 2 vans we have had SOG underfloor outlet filters recommended change is 12 months but I found that it's best to change them every 3 months. The Thetford version has a tiny filter to be effective I would think it needs changing every few weeks. You can refill the filters yourself at a fraction of the cost of a replacement filter.

Anyone who says it doesn't smell when the filter is old must have something wrong with there smell sense, it bl**dy stinks. Just go outside near the vent when someone is using the loo you will soon smell it.

I've just modded my floor venting SOG to a roof vent so filters required and no smell outside the van at people level.

As a singleton, if I'm using my loo, I'm not going to know if it's getting smelly outside. Of course if I'm on a site and in the morning I get up and everyone else has gone, perhaps I might need to take a hint :)

Thetford say their filters are good for a season (4 weeks continuous use). No doubt what is one person's season, will be different to another. But if I equate that to 28 days or so of MH use, I'm probably due to change mine.
