Tiles missing at Start

I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows 10.
Over Christmas a "knowledgeable" family member used it and now I have lost all of the "tiles" that used to come up at Start.
This is a nuisance as I had a number of useful "pinned to start" items on it.
Has anyone any idea as to how I might get them back.

PS Said knowledgeable member has gone home !!

Are you talking about clicking the Start button and the list of apps is missing?
If so, right click on Desktop, click Personalize, click Start and then Show apps list in Start menu to On.

If your talking about the icons not showing on your desktop, right click on Desktop, hover over View and click Show Desktop Icons.

Thanks for the suggestions.
What I have lost is the large "boxes" or Tiles which come up at the start on the main screen.
They show the same illustrations that run along the bottom of this screen.
e.g. Word (W) Excel (X) BBC Sport and other favourites that I have added.
I now seem to have lost the ability to Pin to Start as well.

Have tried your ideas but they did not cure it.

Have you tried right-clicking the app in the Start Menu? Pin to Start should be an option there.
