Am I right in saying that the "automatic vent" is permanently open when the cassette is installed?
If so, could it be causing smells if the toilet is installed with no external hatch? (i.e. there is an open access to the rear of the toilet in the garage compartment).

No. It's the plunger operated valve on top of the cassette which is automatically depressed when the cassette is pushed into place. Part number

I believe that it remains open when the cassette is in place, to prevent a build-up of pressure. However, the cassette bay is sealed from the hab area, so any odour would make its way out through the hatch to the exterior. We have a C200 (although with a slightly different design of pressure valve) and don’t experience any odour whatsoever inside the MH, even when the cassette is full.

Just re-read your post and see that your access to the cassette bay is in the garage. In that case, any odours could certainly make their way into the hab area. 🤢

But a hole at the bottom to the outside?

We had a German tech instructor who was always making reference to --- you will be coming in around the back side. He never understood why we would fall about laughing :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

The only one I have is the one that sits on the Thetford...
I think anyone with a build that has cassette access into the habitation area needs to look at this. I never realised this would be a problem.

There is an alternative vent that you can fit so it vents to outside 👍

Oh that's good. Another 30 quid, on top of the £54 I've just forked out for the seat riser, and the £100 for the spare cassette....
Looks like it's a must. Many thanks.

Thank you muchly for this post, I've just (almost) finished our self build, bought a second hand C200 with no instructions, as per OP I have no external hatch and it is accessed through the garage area, I had no idea that these cassettes were vented!!

i would remove the vent and gaffer tape the hole over to see if that is the source of the smell we had an internal opening for our old self build and didnt have a problem any smell should be trapped inside the toilet

Might be that the cassette needs a service and replace some O-rings.

This might help:

Brand new. But look, when the cassette is pushed in a cam pushes the vent down on its spring and opens the vent. If you push it down when the cassette is out it smells like the hole is open. Admittedly, the smell I was experiencing was worst during the recent hot spell.

Did I read somewhere that there is a blank that can be fitted to it when there is a SOG system fitted?

Not on my Burstners they were all vented by a tube out the bottom of the van
I meant that the topside pressure relief valve isn't vented out of the bottom. The 'hole' in the bottom of the cassette vents via the Thetford SOG-type system or (I have just learned 👍) straight out of the bottom of the cassette compartment.

Mine is the same

that vent type can be replaced with a pressure relief valve ( straight swap) for £16 if needed

I've got a 680G on order and was looking at automatic thetford vents or a SOG. Does this mean I don't need one with a new Burstner? Are they fan assisted or just vented outside?

They used to be vented outside but not now with the double floor models.
You can buy a Thetford SOG kit although I'm not sure they will fit new Burstner

I only ever use the bio laundry liquids from Aldi etc.

My new pilote is vented to outside & it has a double floor , no fan it though

It is just a vent to prevent pressure build up,we used Aldi bio washing sachets and never had a problem.
So nothing like a SOG then
