They do seem to be having a renaissance at the moment. Next door neighbour just got one on his pickup.
Since then I am seeing them everywhere. Seems to be popular with the 20-30 year olds.

I saw a couple of very large gentlemen with one on top of their Renault Clio at a festival a couple of months ago.
