So we're currently in France waiting for the tour. Come last evening the chef is using her phone data and iPad to watch something going in in Wimbledon while I'm on my data and Samsung tablet watching the tour highlights on the ITV hub. Anyway when the bat and ball had finished the chef also went to the ITV hub to see what I was watching and during the commercial breaks had totally different adverts while using the same app. Curious 🤥

That's what the tracking cookies are about. By tracking your individual web searches, general internet activity and what streaming stuff you watch, they can guess what you'd be interested in or which demographic you are and target adverts at you. Advertisers will pay more per ad knowing they are going to the right people (no point advertising over-50s policies to teenagers, for example). It's like why you'll get slightly different adverts on broadcast TV in different types of programmes, but far more personal.

Internet TV isn't a broadcast. Each person watching is sent their own stream of data from the servers. Which means it's easy for them to insert different ads for different users.

Good reasons to clean browsing history ? 👏👏

Yes... but there are dozens of other ways to track you too.

If you've logged into Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc. then their systems can track you. If you are paranoid, you'd use a fresh 'incognito' window for each new site you visited.

Even if you visit each site fresh and anonymously, there's still dozens of parameters that tracking systems can use to identify you with shocking accuracy. Browser version, resolution, certain preferences, PC specs, etc.

Subscribers  do not see these advertisements

Even Sky has Adsmart , and downloads and automatically inserts adverts tailored to you and your age range and viewing habits for a lot of channels these days. So two people watching the same channel in neighbouring houses can get different adverts, and why sometimes if you watch a channel live, and then watch is back as a recording, you can get different adverts as different ads are inserted
