Hi again,
Second question today and the last I promise :lipssealed:

Could you recommend a good steering wheel lock or some security that you all use?
I have stated on the insurance that we will be using one, so best get one sorted ASAP.
Its parked on the drive behind our car at the moment so its perfectly safe, but wouldn't mind getting something in place by the weekend.

Thanks.

Don't be sorry about asking questions; folk on here are always eager to help.

We have a platinum DiskLok for the steering wheel.
The driver's seat is turned around and locked in place with an Oxford Patriot bike lock.
We recently had deadlocks fitted on the front doors.
We have contact alarms, just the cheap battery ones on all doors and windows.
We have 3D printed window catch retainers.
We use a bar across the inside of the habitation door.

I am fully aware that if they want to get in they well, but I wanted to make it harder for them, and some of the measures we use are for our peace of mind when sleeping in the van.

I've not come across an insurer asking specifically for a steering lock in the past - and if you state it on the policy, it would also mean you would have to use it every single time to be covered.
Personally, a really good alarm/immobiliser combined with deadlocks and proplates on the drivers door are what we use.

Check everything your insurer wants. Tracker, wheel lock etc. They will void a claim if you haven't adhered to what they require. Enjoy your new purchase.

Have you considered a Bear Lock? Have a look on You Tube as they offer several different options BUT it doesn't offer a visual deterrent as a steering lock might do.

Check with your insurer first.

We drove our brand new pride and joy directly from the dealers forecourt in the north of England 200 miles to VanBitz (Now Wattguardz) in Taunton and had them fit:

An Alarm (All doors and lockers, plus cycle/external furniture loop)
An Immobiliser (Controlled from our mobile phones)
A Tracker (Which means we can see where the vehicle is on our mobiles)
All of which are invisible, and required by the insurance company.

We also use a standard Milenco 'base ball bat' type steering lock as a visual deterrent.

Which I find is much easier to get on/off and store than the disk lock type of steering lock.
From a thief's point of view I'm sure a baseball bat type of steering lock is just as much a pain in the arse to remove as a disk lock.

Can't cut through the Steering Wheel with the Disklock fitted 👍

Retired commercial insurance broker here operating in the Lloyd’s market for years.

Insurers don’t specify steering wheel locks as they are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.🙈

My security comprises the following:

Tracker. (Recent breakdown in France, within a couple of minutes of the van being loaded on the breakdown truck I received a call from tracker company asking if the vehicle had been stolen 👍)

Prickstop plate
Heosafe cab door locks
Pedal lock as attached photo
Dummy flashing blue LED’s on front, sides and back of motorhome

Over 30 years motorhoming and never had a problem.👍

PS: Son has a very valuable Land Rover, he has a removable steering wheel but that’s a bit over the top for me. 🙈🙈

Steering locks are a great visual deterrent.
And yes, the Disklok appears to be the hardest to remove.
At best they encourage a potential thief to concentrate on the van next door who's not as prepared.

The Motorcycle disc lock to lock the drivers seat in a reversed position is also another deterrent.

We have both on our Van, but I've been using a Disklok on my Land Rover for years.

Yeah, to be fair they didn't ask directly, they asked what security measures I would be taking, so I told them a tracker and a steering wheel lock of some kind, and they took notes on that.
So thought I had better get one asap as if the worst was to happen they might escape paying out on a "technicality".

Cheers

Some insurers definetly do require a specific type/make of steering lock be fitted at all times when the vehicle is parked up, even when in it say on a site or an aire, caravan guard is one such company and they sent me with the qoute the list of products they will except which in my case was only 3...it may depend on the insured value of the vehicle.

Steering locks, well decent ones are certainly not useless.

The disc lock is one of the best and certainly makes an opportunist theif go elsewhere.

The milenco base ball bat one, I agree, no need to cut anything, just use leverage and it comes off.

My insurer, Caravan Guard, listed a few locks as a condition of insurance. I use the Milenco, which slots into a gap behind the drivers seat so is handy to reach for, and I fit it everytime we leave the van, another condition of insurance.

Stoplock Pro, but it's just a deterrant, clutchlock for the pedals, same. Main security is the alarm/tracker/immobiliser fitted by wattguardz.

Disklok is great, about the most secure steering lock you can buy.
If you get one, buy the storage bag. It is Velcro backed and allows you to store the lock on the floor between the seats when driving.
I find it fits nicely in the door bin of my Fiat based X250 version.

Currently use the disklok but it’s quite bulky to store in the van so tend not to take it when we go away, which is probably when we need it the most! Think I might sell it and replace with the Milenco baseball style lock and an Oxford Patriot disc lock for the drivers seat. As many people have already said it’s less about stopping a determined thief and more about moving them on to an easier target. We also have a tracker and blink camera… the camera is mainly to keep an eye on the dogs on the rare occasion we leave them in the van! In fact the dogs are probably our most effective deterrent… both soppy but they can make a racket!

I’m obviously not going to tell you how but an experienced thief can get round a Disclok within a minute.
