I'm going to look at a 2008 519 ex-police sprinter tomorrow for conversion and it has a 3.0v6 diesel engine, 125k on the clock. Is there anything to be worried about? Us it going to cost me sn arm and leg to run?

How often (or at what mileage) have you had to replace them? Also what sort of mpg are you getting?

I get about 21mpg out of mine but not at all bothered. A really great engine and superb for hauling 5 1/2 tonnes of van around

A bit less than my 313 then..

I can't remember offhand but I was surprised that one had went faulty so soon, ended up 3 were faulty but because I have an A class it's very difficult to access them. Probably do around 21mpg ,I very rarely go over 55mph.

My 2010 Vito 3.0 V6 auto has 175k on the clock and is a pleasure to drive.
I've driven 25k since July's service & mot without issue.
Currently overdue another service....
She's a thirsty girl though, be surprised if I'm getting 20mpg, guess it's the price of comfort and performance
Odd sensors have needed replacing, seem to remember an ECU fault a few years ago, otherwise completely dependable (y)

Wow, if you're nit even getting 20mpg in a Vito I'd have no chance of hitting that in a 5ton lwb sprinter conversion thatll probably weigh twice what your Vito does.

The Vito weighs nothing - if I had to pick fault it would be lack of weight on rear axle.
My mpg is due to town driving and 70-80mph on motorway. Rarely travel at 50-60mph ;)

In the big scheme of things, I don’t think that the odd couple of MPG makes a big difference; it is more about the ease of driving.....

I understand that but if I think a trip to the Alps and back costing £200 more in fuel alone let alone a 5ton costing more on the ferry or tunnel than a 3.5 ton it adds up. I think it would do my head in everytime I stopped for fuel.

I’m with you on that but nowadays have the feeling that life is too short to worry over much.

As a retired Cop I wouldn't have an old Police van or car for free, excepting a traffic car.

They are used and abused 24/7/365, year in year out. They are never cleaned, full of shit, piss, blood, vomit and have had some of the skankiest people known to man in the back of them; god knows what could be lurking within! Added to that the polis don't get rid of them until they are shagged, done, used up and ready for the scrappy. They suffer from poor maintenance, an infinite number of bad drivers treating them like shite and are often used in response and pursuit duties so will have had the knackers revved off them all their life. If it has ever been pranged it would have been put back together with poor quality generic parts, gaffer tape and prit stick and shoved out the door barely fit for purpose.

I spent many a year in them, some of them were so shagged they were dangerous and I just refused to use them. Others were so dirty that you could smell the van on your clothes when you got home after a shift, others were in such a poor state that you spent regular portions of a shift ferrying it around to get fixed. Sometimes "the van" is used as a mild punishment/rebuke/torture to show the gaffers displeasure and correct a miscreants misdeeds. I remember on numerous occasions prefering to do a walking shift rather than get "the van".

Am I painting a picture here friend? Do yourself a favour and move on, there's a good chap....

You couldn't handle what I REALLY think!

Just trying to save the Dude a big wedge.

Caveat emptor....

Don't know about ex police but my 4ton a class with 3.0l v6 has returned around 24mpg on a 1500mile run down to south Spain in four days this week. Speed 60-70 mph where permitted.

I took the 519 3.0l V6 out for a test drive today. It has bags of power and more but, and this is a deciding factor why I wont be buying it, it revs a lot higher than my 313. At 60mph my 313 is doing a little over 2k rpm whereas the 519 is doing 2.5k rpm and 3k rpm at 70mph. I found myself wanting another 2 gears. So it's geared differently maybe in the diff (I'm no mechanic). Diesel here in the UK is roughly £6 a gallon . Returning 17.5 or even 20mpg is going to have a serious cost implication long term. I think Ill be looking for a 316 or similar.

Plus it was tatty.

That is different gearing to mine. I have the 7 speed auto, though

Yes you want something that is around 2000rpm= 70/75mph & 2500rpm = 90mph

I'm wondering whether the 316 ( is there a 318? ) is geared the same as the 313
