Hi all

I'm new to the whole world of motorhome ownership. Mine doesn't have a spare wheel. Is that normal? And what do you do if you get a puncture?

Hi welcome.

This topic has many options. If you search the forum for spare wheel you will find lots of information about it.

But, to answer your first question, yes it is quite normal not to have a spare. You get a pump with Goo attachment which is about as much use as a wet paper bag....

We've had a spare with all of our motorhomes. You've not mentioned which type of Fiat based van you have, maybe there's an option to carry one that you purchase yourself or maybe fit an ALKO spare wheel carrier underneath?

Spare wheels were "deleted" to enable unscrupulous manufacturers to quote higher payloads - a full spare wheel and its associated carrier can easily eat up 50kg. That's why modern cars these days have a metal disc with a rubber band round it for a "spare"!

I've had the m/h for 12 years and the only puncture I ever had was whilst parked on a campsite and a local came out to me to fix it. Morocco but that's a fun story in itself. In my whole life I can only ever recall having to change a wheel on the road on two occasions due to a puncture

But there is no way I will travel without one so weight-wise it just gets accommodated, although my van came with a spare as standard. If it happened and I ended up on the side of the road - or, heaven forbid, on a smart (i.e. suicide) motorway - I'll call the breakdown service anyway.

One possible problem, if you are in France and suffer a tyre failure, garages will only fit a matching pair. Although there are a lot of French motorhomes, camping car tyres especially for the heavier vans are somewhat scarce. I had to wait three days for a pair of 21570/R15’s.

We have a spare, but I would not be inclined to change it myself - for one thing, the provided ‘jack’ does not fill me with confidence in its ability to support the ‘van.......! Use your breakdown cover to get it changed. ;)

The goo kit is designed to repair simple punctures. With a compressor to blow it back up again.

If you want to save weight without carrying a spare, have the pre-puncture goo put into your tyres. Doesn't ruin the tyre like the post puncture stuff that comes with the MH and has already sealed a puncture on mine with no loss of pressure.

Plenty for sale on the usual websites if you feel the need. I have one and bought one for my daily driver but not for the toad.

Andy PK is right - you might be cheaper and quicker checking the benefits on your bank account, they usually throw in RAC / Green Flag support.... you will just have to join the queue when you get a puncture though.

The bank cover may not cover anything over 3.5t or European travel so that needs checking.
