We are looking to get away from this cold miserable weather for a short spell.... can't go for more than 12 days due to my medical conditions, so, we have decided to take the ferry from Pompey to Santander, have 8 days in that area and then ferry back.

Has anyone on here got nice campsites / aires that they would recommend near to the coast....... we are not taking bikes ( can't cycle a distance now), so would like to be in an area where we can walk into a town / village for shopping and meals out.

Would also like a recommend for an overnight about 1 hr from Bilbao, as we return from there.

T.I.A. and look forward to your recommends.

Great area. Pamplona and Logrono both have Aires with a short walk into town. Bilbao has an aire over looking the city with a regular bus service. For starters…

We like Camping El Rosal. Its about a 20-25 min walk to the local town & 5 mins walk to the beach. Just pick a pitch when you get there, if lucky you will get an estuary view pitch.

We are staying at Potes at an aire on the edge of town 15euros a night with another 4 for leccy there are WCs and showers.
It's less than 2 hours drive from Santander, it's a lovely old town full of bars and restaurants.
If you look on "picture of your van camping last night" I posted a couple of pictures earlier.

Santillana del Mar and Comillas are our favourite places in that part of the world.
One of Antonio Gaudi’s (of Sagreda familia fame) houses is in Comillas.

What time of the year are you going? The north coast can be wet, it's called Green Spain for a reason.

The problem is there isn't really a time of year when you can be sure of dry weather, unlike the south of Spain.

We've had some great times on the north coast and particularly like Galicia but that's possibly further west than you might want to travel if time is short.

My only advice is to have a Plan B and be able to head a bit south and probably south east and away from the Atlantic if the forecast is poor.

I'm not trying to put you off northern Spain, it's a great area. Enjoy it. :)

Another vote for Comillas and a visit to Gaudi’s El Capricho. There are a number of aires and campsites on the town’s seaward side.

We are traveling around the area at the moment but trying to avoid places we have been to before.

This like should take you to the post on my thread where we entered Spain, post #258 on the thread.

Also quite a few of my trips go through Northern Spain links in my signature.

We're leaving France on Monday for a month in Santa Susanna, then heading to the north of Spain, Before we've only ever spent a night there on the way to the ferry. This time we want to see a lot more of it before going back to France's West coast.

Cracking park up near Bilbao with great views and a lovely bike ride into the city.

Camping. Virgen Del Mar near Santander is well worth a visit. Short walk into a lovely town and stunning scenery down by the beach, plus a couple of bars there too.

The aire above Bilbao is an experience. Short bus ride into the city.

Check out my journal from last year when we did the north coast of Spain, we stayed on super places. But as always it depends on your requirements.
Good luck on your trip, It was our first time traveling that part of Spain and we loved it.

Do not miss San Sebastián, it is outstanding.

We stopped at Gran Camp Zaraurtz a few years ago, on top of cliffs overlooking the town with spectacular views.

Laredo, between Santander and Bilbao, is nice. We stayed at Camping Regaton on the estuary. Bit of a walk to any commercial stuff though.

I also stopped at Zaraurtz a few years ago at the beginning of December, great little campsite, up on the hillside , overlooking the bay with it's own small bar and bistro.

In December, there was parking in the town and only about a 25 minutes from San Sebastian. 👍

PS. The sun shone all the time I was there and didn't turn cold until I went inland and further South! 😱

And the Gaudi House, absolutely sublime architecture.

We stay in San Sebastian on our way to the ferry, but after 350 miles on a motorbike, we were too tired to do anything more than a quick look.
Now we're not on a timetable we want to see more.

A other vote for Bilbao aire but just note they do ocassionally have events there that close it.

There are some nices aires around Bilbao area but you need parking verde app for some of them.

You've already received plenty of recommendations for exploring our beautiful northern coast.
I just wanted to add that Santander is probably the best option for the night before Bilbao. There are fewer options in the Bilbao area, but Santander has the municipal "área de autocaravanas" and a few more places like this one:
