Hi all simple question because it’s driving me mad.
Ive been looking at getting a Toad for some time and finally think I found what I wanted which is:

A Smart Fortwo cabriolet 0.9L auto around a 2019 (a 453 model). I’ve found out the sequence of how to flat tow them no problem and I’ve spoken to some companies about A frames as I don’t want to trailer it, now I’m getting closer to actually buying one the companies I spoke to about the A frame are now saying either no or may not be able to do it?
So the question is has anyone got a Smart 2016 on, which is the new shape 453 with an Auto box that they tow on an A frame? If so where did you get it fitted it can’t be any different surely? I would Obviously like it done as cheaply as possible but if it’s a 3k install and works that’s what matters.

Thanks Martin

It is possible. My son towed an older Smart4Two cabriolet and now tows a 2019 or 2020 model (not a cabriolet). He had them adapted to A frame use by a firm near Chichester run by an ex Smart car mechanic.

We tow a Kia Picante on an A frame. We had ours fitted by Towbars 2 Towcars. We bought the car off them too. I am still sulking as I had to swap my Mercedes for a Kia!! Excellent service from the two guys there, very helpful and friendly with the after sales help too.

Thanks any chance you can try and find out who? I’ve had a Google but can’t find the company.
Thanks

I'm a newbie
This is what I found, the older smarts have a robotised gearbox which is basically a normal clutch arrangement without the pedal, the 453 has a DSG box

This was on www.towaframe.com

The new smart 453, both fortwo and forfour, with the automatic DSG gearbox (Twinamic) cannot be flat towed and must be towed on a trailer with all four of the wheels off the ground

I have a Smart four four Manuel and despite preferring an Auto went with the Manuel as advised Smart Auto cannot be flat towed.
I use Lnb tow bars of Bristol for several tow bars and other Motorhome bits and they are really helpful.

I had an older Smart and it was quite hard to get it round mini roundabouts and potholes at junctions without setting of a wheel wobble. I now have a VW Up which is much easier to tow.

Thanks I’ve had a look and am going to contact them because although many say you can’t flat tow a newer one I’ve found several instructions on how to disarm the auto box.
I can tell you he will say no. I have a 2012 451 SMART with A-Frame and a 2018 453 Auto that I would love to flat tow. I too have read the SMART America instructions for flat towing the DSG gearbox. Get something wrong with the sequence and the gearbox will be destroyed £££. In Mike's (Tow-a-Frame) view it is simply not worth the risk. Manual 453 - no problem.
