As post bedroom skylight leaking not been on roof yet too wet. Is it usually just the mastic sealant?

Depends on the style / design of the skylight
on our Hymer we have a leak, along with a few others, down the winding spindle which goes through the roof outside of the roof light cut out

Yes it’s normally the sealant which has deteriorated.
To do it properly you need to remove it completely, clean both surfaces and reseal.

I went to reseal a 400x400 pop up but when mastic removed there was a hairline crack along the ridge. Lucky to spot it or would have been questioning my own sealing capabilities 
..... Binned it and bought complete new replacement using the mastic on a roll after cleaning.
