Please can anyone with one of these engines take a look in their service manual for me? I would like to know the service schedule, and particularly anything that mentions frequency of gearbox oil changes. Gearbox in this case is the 6-speed manual one. Information on this seems to be incredibly difficult to find on the web. Although I can find plenty of horror stories about the gearbox bearings failing.

I believe that the 3 litre engine has a chain rather than a cam belt. Is there any recommendation in the service manual as to when this might need changing? I have found the odd forum comment about change the cam belt at 5 years, chain at 10 years - but nothing even approaching an authoritative source.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Haven't got the book to hand, but I'm sure the cam chain is good for 250,000 miles (our 3 litre is on 99k now)

Hello Maz, I work for Renault, If you want to send me your reg number by pm I will get you the information you require.
Hi Jim and thank you for that. It’s not my van though, but one for sale that I am toying with going to see. The number plate is not shown in the ad, but I will be asking the dealer for it so I can do an MOT history check.

There is no mention of service history in the ad, and I like to be as well informed as possible before viewing so I know what questions to ask/paperwork to check.

From what I’ve learnt on the web so far, the PK6/PF6 gearbox is prone to bearing failure, often at relatively low mileages for a gearbox. Changing the gearbox oil at each major service seems to be the best preventative measure to guard against this. Hence my wanting to know the service schedule, so that I can tell whether or not this has been done.

A ‘like’ for your post wasn’t really appropriate - I meant to select an ‘informative’.

Your gearbox dying at 40k is just the sort of thing I’d like to avoid. :Eeek:

Well I wanted too also I did have the gear oil changed.
Lots of scary info on google.

I hope this helps, without a reg number there is still some guess work involved however this is the service schedule for a 2007 140 bhp.
I cannot find any service schedule info on the gearbox, however I have made a note of the gearbox oil that we use on this model that is recommended by the manufacturer.
I hope this information is of some help.

Many thanks for that, Jim. As a major service is scheduled for every 2 years, it seems that is when ideally the gearbox oil should also be changed to avoid problems.

Most gearboxes 're sealed for life now days how long that life is is the mystery

Update

Having spoken to the dealer, the van in question (10 years old) has no record of ever having the gearbox oil changed. Having obtained the reg number I did an MOT history check - it was last MOTed in Aug 2016. So it has been sitting around somewhere for 2-3 years. The current dealer mentioned they had had it in stock for about a year. I will not be pursuing it any further. Thanks to everyone for their input. (y)
