Hi Everyone,

This is a post to ask for peoples experience with Rolls 460ah 6v batteries.

Ive managed to pick up four which have had very little use and well maintained.

Im currently only running two of them for my 12v system. I will be moving to four once I've built my battery box.

If anyone who's used these batteries could give some feed back, any issues they had with them with charging from solar ect.

Thanks
Dora & the gang

They are top quality batteries , very heavy , I have Trojan 6v not so heavy , also quite a bit cheaper :)
They have a very good makers site for info . Should be able to handle a lot of solar

On our house we have 8x s480 on a 48v system since March 2016. They have been superseded now. Yours are similar build. They want good charging rates, C6 to C12 at 20h rate, and high voltage. If you go on rolls website you will find the manual pdf for charging and maintaining these batteries. First thing you wanna look for is hydro caps, these will replace the normal caps. What they do is recombination of gases instead excessive venting. They are slight taller than original caps and have ceramic beads inside, with a valve and drain nipple. I add about 250-300ml per cell every 3-4 months. If you don’t use water is first sign of undercharging. Second You need to make sure the charger can do the proper 3 stage bulk absorb float with adjustable inputs so you can dial in the right parameters. Also a must is a hydrometer, the only way to test the health and state of charge. I use a hydro volt dial type with temperature compensation built in. It is essential to have the compensation adjustment. Every 6 months or so I check specific gravity and if cells differ more than 15 points aka 1,65 1,45 I run a maintenance equalising charge. Sometimes a mild 1 hr at 62v (48v bank) does the job. My target is 1,65-1,80. It will not rise more than that. Another think to consider is a vented battery box. But if you fit the hydro caps it will hardly vent at all. If the plates are white at the top, give them a good charge and keep them on high float 14v for couple of days. In fact since You don’t know their past start with that. Build the bank with all 4 and charge them. Check level before and have the caps slight loose. Once in float check density and log all cells for future reference.
If you want to know more just ask.

I posted that on phone and could not see the pics properly, then I’ve seen your pics properly on iPad, yours are agm’s. The bit for the flooded does not apply for you, get the manual from rolls.com.

Hi Raul,

Yes I guessed you had not seen they are AGM. Thank you for the advice though I will get the manual 👍
