I was speaking to a friend
in Nerja last night who tried to get his moho registered in Spain a few weeks ago only to be refused because the hab door is on the nearside and therefore opens into oncoming traffic! I had heard of problems with the ITV (Spanish MOT) stations with regard to rhd vehicles not having an acceptable field of view but this is the first I've heard of a refusal for the hab door. Surely it's not much different to having a passenger door on a coach build although I accept you would have to be more careful as you don't have wing mirror to check or a windshield to look out of but personally I think it's a bit picky. Has anyone else heard of this or had a similar problem?

Shouldn't be refused for that. A purpose built motorhome shouldn't be refused when right hand drive & with door on the offside(spanish) . personally I'd go back & ask for the engineer & discuss it with him. They usually all speak good english if the spanish isn't up to it.
If no success there then ask for the 'Hojas de reclamación' ( complaint forms) .Don't be fobbed off .
The form should be in triplicate, nothing else is acceptable, you can fill them in in any language with your complaint. If the person has been using a 'gestoria' to do the stuff then you won't get him asking for the 'hojas' as he'll be persona no grata forever after & as it is his livelihood they wont upset the apple cart..
A standalone foreigner doesn't have that problem

There are plenty of rhdrive motorhomes registered on spanish plates. Van based ones are the usual ones refused due to A) being based on a commercial vehicle & lack of allround vision if rhd

Thanks for the informative reply, my friend has actually sold the vehicle now and is looking to buy a lhd van, its a pity I hadn't seen him in a few months otherwise he could have followed up on your advice. We have been considering applying for residency in either Spain or Portugal and keeping our rhd van for a while now so it's good to know what our options are ?

I’ve heard it’s expensive

We purchased a LHD Hymer UK registered from Spain. Because it was too much money and hassle for the owners to get it registered in Spain.

We keep cars in Spain, UK registered for 6 months.

I was going to get one of them registered in Spain until gus-lopez informed me of the legalities and illegalities of driving the car as a non resident .
