Just a quick one. Heard some sites dont like what I believe is called a tag axle! 2axles one behind the other. If this is right does the same apply to twin wheels on a rear single axle

No and the French charge class 4 on the tolls for Tandem/tag axle, 4 wheels on the one rear axle would be class 3 or possibly 2 if below 3 metres tall but officially class 3.

it is not as common as it used to be. refusing bookings from tag axle motorhomes and caravans was apparently to block the travelling communities aka pie keys

So dont go looking for a tag axle or dual wheel axle. But if are dream can has one dont let it put us off. Or are we better of stearing clear.

Twin wheel RWD with a diff lock is best in my book.

I have had 2 tag axle vans and much prefer them to the ‘normal’ 2 axle van we have now. Drive is much more stable - no wafting about when overtaking lorries. Also some great layouts and payloads to be had on a tag axle chassis. In 6 years of driving tags fulltime I have never encountered refusal at a site. Give me a tag any day! (y)

You have never been refused in both the UK and the continent is that right

We are now in our fourth year of sort of full timing. We have never ever ever been turned away with our tag axle whether in the UK or Europe. We just sometimes have to be careful because some sites have weight restrictions. We have sunk a couple of times...all adds to the tapestry etc(y)

We have been turned away at two sites in France:
Amboise, and

Somewhere just south of Carcasson

It is such a slim chance of being refused as to be a minor concern , when looking at what moHo you want to buy , layout and payload are far bigger and more important factors . Much the same with tolls , its all a balancing act between expense and outcome needed.

Never paid class 4 on any french tolls always 3 or 2 but we do have to ask for the reduction

Used tags only in U.K. but this ‘sites refuse tags’ business pretty much comes under the heading of urban myths. Allegedly the odd site may take a dislike to tags because ‘they chew up the grass’. My answer to that is that some drivers chew up the grass - because they don’t get the softly softly approach to moving off. They would still manage to spin their wheels and get stuck in any kind of van.

My experience disproves your assertion that it’s a myth.

There are two reasons why a site owner may wish to discourage/ban tag axles:
  • Because they can’t ban/discriminate against ‘travelers’
  • Because they can tear up the ground.
The latter is not associated with poor driving and spinning front wheels it because the third axle shears across the ground when turning.

What you need is a tag axle MH towing a tri-axle trailer to really upset them:rofl:

But it’s so rare as to be of no significance. :)

And of all the vans that I have seen chewing up the grass, none of them have been tag axles! ;)

Rare, agreed, but not, as suggested, an urban myth. ;)

Not that I care, we will take our money elsewhere, but I have just had a look at the website and cannot see where it says tags are not welcome. There is a small piece about over 7mtrs.

The site had issues with the travelling folk a bit back, à lot of damage caused so he decided to be on the safe side and turn away tags. Don't think he is worried about losing money by turning away tags as site is very busy thoughout the year..

I understand his feelings completely but it would possibly save some embarrassment and journeys by people in Tags if it were made obvious on the site.
