how easy is it to upgrade ram on an asus laptop,is it something I could do myself(is it just a case of plugging a bit in) or should I get someone to do it, it has 4gb but think i need more for video editing

It's usually a matter of unscrewing and opening a flap underneath then clipping the RAM chips into their slots. Easy enough.

It's easy, but two things to note on the laptop.

1. Research the model number online - many different ways to take the machine apart to access the DRAM slots. Some machines have a simple hatch with a couple of screws, or might even be toolless. Others need a fairly major disassembly (screws and clips).
2. Make sure you remove the battery – this is even more important on machines where the battery is not externally removable. In these cases you might have to disconnect the battery lead that goes into the motherboard once the back is off.

But, all models are different.

It depends on many things, not least is will it take an upgrade? The Crucial memory website is as good a guide as any. The Asus site should tell you what you currently have and if you have spare slots. If not, you may be able to replace with higher density chips. There will almost certainly be Youtube video's showing how to open your particular model. It's fiddly rather than difficult.

Look up the model specs on the Asus website, it should tell you the maximum memory you can fit. Also whether they are single units or whether they need to be fitted in pairs. (for example if you want 8Gb you might be able to fit a single 8Gb unit, or you might need to fit two 4Gb units). Memory is not usually expensive, so I'd say you should fit the maximum it will take.

The memory needs to be a compatible type, as meanders says the Crucial website is good for this.

As you are actually fitting it, if you don't have an antistatic workstation (most people don't) don't wear a nylon/polyester jumper, roll your sleeves up. If there's a device with an earthed metal case like a computer case or a desk lamp then touch it every few seconds to dissipate any static. Try not to touch the gold metal pins of the memory unit. leave it in its antistatic packaging until you are actually ready to fit it in its slot.

To remove the existing memory, push apart the two spring clips, the unit will pop up a bit, it can then be slid out from its connector.
