Can anyone advise on the following please?

Our dog had his first rabies vaccination on 17.08.2015. On his passport there are three dates:

Vaccination date: 17.08.15
Valid From: 08.09.15
Valid Until: 08.09.18

I went to the vet today to have his routine vaccinations carried out and so took his passport. The vet looked at the above dates and said I needed to get the next rabies vaccination before the 17.08.18. I'm confused... I thought that 'valid until' date was when the vaccination was due. I know its only a few days and I'm not bothered as we will have plenty of time to get things in order. I'm just confused with the dating. I realise that when the first vaccination is carried out you have to wait 21 days for it to become effective.

Can anyone explain why he needs to be done before the 16th August rather than before the 8th September please?

It's so that there is a period of effectiveness. Without getting too much into the finer points and I'm sure some will, its the overlap period and it'll come into line with the vaccination dates. Not a great problem for the time difference

No, I agree its not a problem - however it could have been in that I wasn't going to get him vaccinated until the 7th September, one day before the 'valid until' date.

I can understand the 21 day wait from the first vaccination until it becomes effective but thought that subsequent vaccinations did not have this waiting time. I'm sure I can't be the first to have potentially fallen foul of confusion over dates. Had I done so I'd have to start the course again and have a 21 day wait before travelling which would have been a right PITA.

I suspect the 'valid to' date should have been stated as 16/8/18 and NOT 08/09/18 as the 3 year period starts from when the jab is first administered.

The 'valid from' date is there so that if you are taking your dog abroad immediately after the jab when you return the border control staff can clearly see the date when the immunisation becomes effective (ie after a period of at least 21 days for the antibodies to build up in the dog's immune system) thus you wouldn't be allowed back into the UK until the 'valid from' date is passed.

The difference between the dates is 7 days so I am guessing when the passport was originally filled in it was possible the guidance was boosters needed 7 days to become effective.
In the old two part vaccination the treatment was not effective until 7 days after the second vaccination. It seems reasonable boosters also needed 7 days then.
If you want to wait until just before travelling you might want to check with the ferry/tunnel operator and check their interpretation of the rules.

Yes, I think they've entered the incorrect date on the passport. I'm feeling relieved that I've found out about it in good time! Oh well, no harm done.... thanks folks! :)

Not wanting to be pedant it closer to 21 days methinks
You're absolutely right - I hadn't spotted the month. So it's 21 days after the vaccine is given before it becomes effective and then lasts for three years.
I guess the question is after the booster what date will the vet enter for the "effective from" date?

Our dog had his first rabies vaccination on 17.08.2015. On his passport there are three dates:

Vaccination date: 17.08.15
Valid From: 08.09.15
Valid Until: 08.09.18

The format is always the same. The first date is the date of the vaccination. The second is the date it is effective from & the third is the 3 year validity period from the date it is effective from. You are required to have the new vaccination BEFORE the first date 3 year anniversary i.e 17.08.2018
failure to do it renders the whole lot invalid.

Here in spain the format is exactly the same except over a 1 year period.
i.e my dogs last year reads.
date of vacc=19-04-2017
valid from = 10-05-2017
valid until=10-04-2017
normally it is 3 weeks between the first two but I also have ones that are dated 1 month between them.
The important part is that the revaccination is done before the first date.

There has to be an overlap. If you wait until the last date 'valid until' then there is no overlap & possibility of lack of anti-bodies. The only date that concerns anyone is the date that the dog was vaccinated on .The revaccination has to be done before 3years of that date is up
