Just sitting here dreaming of being on that ferry I now know what a bird in a cage must feel like & god knows why anyone would want to re- offend & go back to prison hope you are all getting ready to spread your wings happy travels soon we hope take care Rod

Poole/Cherbourg looks shorter than the Plymouth/Roscoff route we normally use. What's it like?

(Too lazy to check prices online. 😀)

Hi we have used it now for the last 3 years it sails at 8-30 every day takes about 4 hours & if you have a dog they can stay in your van you can stay overnight on the port where they have lovely toilets & hot showers you can almost book the day before we thought it was a bit expensive before but from us it's only 70 miles so much better than having to travel all the way up to Dover we pay about £150 one way & that includes the dog hope that helps cheers Rod

We really like it because Poole is only an hour from home for us. Poole is small and a bit old fashioned like Plymouth so the people directing you into line are always cheerful and often ask about the van/trip/bikes or bike rack.
Cherbourg is so quiet and easy to drive out of and the peninsula absolutely lovely.
When we arrive back in Poole it’s so nice to be back home in an hour.

We have BF Spanish membership so get 15% off the fare, I think you changed yours to the French membership. In high season they do run the vomit commet as well but we’ve only done that once in our old Autosleeper Symbol from Le Havre to Portsmouth, I think the max length is 6m.

It must be two and a half hours from Plymouth but worth considering, perhaps going out that way then return via Roscoff. We enjoy that part of France, great sea food. 😀

Hi forgot to say also there's an Aire about a couple of minutes from the port with a naval museum & about 5 mins walk into town

I couldn‘t help myself and decided to look at going out late August and coming back late September! Going out is the normal 8.30am crossing and is £180 -£220 full fare at the moment but unfortunately they are only doing an overnight 10 hour crossing on the Barfleur Coming back which is a bit mad as during the day it’s 4 and a half . Presume you must have to row.

I agree the facility at Poole is brilliant for overnighting. The only downside for me is that the Barfleur is a fairly small ship, and the vehicle deck is quite cramped.

Also coming back from Cherbourg, just up by the aire is aquarium and a nautical museum worth going in if you have time to spare. (y) We use Poole to cherbourg because it sails early and coming back gets into Poole about 10pm so we just drive round to where the departures are park up there for the night and go home in the morning. It is a struggle though watching everyone getting on the ferry when your coming back.

Unfortunately they are only doing an overnight on the Cherbourg to Poole from mid August until the end of September this year which is rather disappointing because we rather like the crossing that gets in at 9 or 10 pm as well as we’re only an hour from Poole. I looked yesterday after DBK put the idea in my head!
