Son has online interview for the Uni in a week or so and he’d like to visit to get a feel of the city and see the university colleges before offers/rejections come out on 11th January.

So we’re looking for somewhere to stay 1 or 2 nights in Oxford with easy access to the city.

Any ideas? The C&CC is obviously one option and there seem to be a couple of Britstops too.

The easiest access is from the CC&C with the adjacent park and ride but also walkable into city centre.
Good luck to your son, it’s an amazing city and university

There is a campsite called Valley Farm Camp Site at Farmoor on the Eynsham Road (2miles from city centre). It is on a good bus route. They have a couple of hardstandings and toilets, plus elec hook up. Also a great on site Pizza Hut.

A very relaxed site, but grass gets boggy

£20 per night

Campsite by park and ride works well, though needs a spruce up.
Have a look at Oriel, Merton and Corpus colleges - all small and friendly.
Oxford interviewers look for excellent academia (of course) but also for someone who will add to the college - so sport, music, extra curricular and above all character/ a lively, inquiring mind. The right balance between a shrinking boring wall flower and a cocky bugger. Bright eyes and good manners go far. Be prepared to see all sides of an argument.

The CCC site is fully booked for MHs for the weekend that works best for us (17-19th Dec).
Jim do you know if carpark still possible?

Sorry, I've not been there for quite a number of months so cannot confirm either way.

A bit further out but we stay at Henley on Thames in September and caught the train to Oxford, it was about 45mins from Henley to Oxford with a change.

We use the CL at 216 Lane End, Kidlington. Tel: 01865 374572
it was £12 earlier this year and has been for aeons but the owner has passed away and his son has taken over and is going up. 3 min walk to the main road and convenience store and the direct bus route into Oxford.

Thanks. This is really useful. His interview is with Oriel. We don’t get a lot of pupils at school applying to Oxbridge so he’ll just need to be himself … he’s really lucky to have an amazing Chemistry teacher who has taught him the ‘missing bits’ from A level that aren’t covered by the Advanced Higher course so he shouldn’t be on the back foot.

My old college!

No need for prejudices - they will take on merit. If anything, a fancy private school would be a disadvantage.
Indeed, be yourself. Don't bullshit - the interviewers are bright but they are not out to trap you.

Best of luck, you must be so proud.....

Well we should have been heading there this weekend but ….

Son went to his S6 school dance and brought back more than he went with - so under the new Scottish household isolation rules we are all in self isolation until Sunday night 🙄🙄.

He’s also had unconditional offers from Saint Andrews and Edinburgh over last couple of days and is sorely tempted to accept St Andrews - he fell in love when we visited this summer.

He enjoyed 1 of his Oxford interviews immensely, found another challenging but enjoyable and the third one put him off Oxford completely! That was actually the first one of the three but he was absolutely determined to finish the process.

So, I think we’ll rearrange our visit to Oxford in spring - as tourists! Hopefully the Omicron situation will have improved by then too.
