Took the van out a few days ago and had been sat for about 10 days in the hot weather.

On starting, oil pressure warning light took a bit longer than usual to go out and the low oil pressure warning came on the dash.

Immediately the light went out and warning stopped. Over the next few days, it didn’t come back but the light was taking longer than usual to extinguish, about 3 seconds rather than 1 or 2. More noticeable the longer it was left.

This has only ever happened before when filling a new filter after an oil change which I do every 6 months.

Oil level is between min and max and checked with multiecuscan and the oil pressure is good, no knocks or weird running, just the time taken for the light to go out. No fault codes.

So…..

When I serviced it recently, the only thing I did was use GSF car parts instead of my normal local factors as their returns policy was much better. The new oil filter was budget looking to say the least, previously it’s only ever had Bosch filters. I used the correct 5w-30 oil.

Does anyone know if there is an internal valve in the OEM quality filters where the cheap rubbish I stuck on doesn’t have it?

I suspect the oil filter is emptying of oil and having to fill it again on restarting.

I will be taking the junk one off and replacing with a decent one, just thought I would check with experts as well.

Probably as you’ve said filter allowing a bit of drain down.

I use GSF but always fit the “premium” parts Bosch or similar to oe.
I won’t be using them again, the clutch and slave were OEM as were the shockers but the filters looked awful as was the customer service.

Lesson learned, new oil filter on the way. £11 I should have just spent in the first place on the decent one. :-(

At least it’s a quick and easy job.

Didn’t GSF have Bosch for your vehicle.

Mauer (sp) are an oe item as well supplied by GSF.

edit I only tend to use GSF for parts.
APD is another factor but I avoid Eurocar parts.

As i was reading your post I was thinking about the backflow valve, but I don't know what the orientation is.
Good shout me thinks

They might have done, I never checked the manufacturer when I ordered. It was this one. For the price, I don’t hold out much hope for the non return valve at less than £4.

The Bosch has one, as does the cheap filter, but at the price the cheap filter is, I wouldn’t guarantee it works. The Bosch spec is below.

Well we’ll never too old to learn.
I’ve thought the same for the last few oil changes. I’ve now ordered some Bosch filters as opposed to the cheaper versions.
Never occurred to me that the oil would/could drain out of the filter. Makes perfect sense.
Thanks for the info.
Hope I notice the difference.

Never buy cheap oil, oils filters or air filters also diesel filters.

Anything that’s oe equivalent will be ok.

They don’t need to have Ford, Fiat, VW etc etc as these are supplied by outside manufacturers.

My mate recently bought a Mini which was silly cheap, due to oil light. Obviously showing is soon demise.

Fitted a quality oil filter, and all good. Now sold on for a very nice profit 👌🏻👌🏻

Changed the filter today.

The cheap one did have a NRV in it, in the form of a rubber flange. It didn’t look all that oil tight TBH.

This is the new Bosch filter.

The old cheap one and then the old one in bits.

The oil light went out immediately as soon as the engine started. This may be due to me running it to fill the new filter, I will leave it a few days and try it Friday.

I just changed my filter for a Bosch & it does seem to have made a difference.
I’m pretty sure the old filter was letting the oil drain back. I naturally lost some oil but not as much as I had to put back to return the level to normal. I did check it before changing filter.
I guess the oil draining back would give a false dipstick level! I’ll check again tomorrow when it’s settled overnight.

I barely lost any oil changing it either, I am fairly sure it was draining back too.

Will update once I have left it and see.

Don’t buy cheap filters is the message. :)

Never have done being fifty years in the motor trade, Only genuine or OE spec from reputable manufacturers, in the 70s Fram was a good make but after being taken over there quality control went south so no longer used them,
I you stick with Mann/ Bosch/Mahle/Blue print/K/N you won’t go far wrong

Good advice.

In retrospect, I don’t know what I expected for less than £4 and they still make a profit.

Even the Bosch filter at £11 was cheap. Thinking back, I just put the parts I needed in the search box and added to trolley and never checked the make.

Thankfully I made sure I used an OEM clutch and slave cylinder. That would have been sub optimal if I was having issues with those.

Started again this morning & it’s definitely made a difference. Oil light goes out much quicker. Another lesson learned!
Filter ive been using was a Quintin hazel brand, thought they were reputable & at £11 not particularly cheap. Bosch was £18. I weighed both brands & Bosch was only 11g heavier a bit pedantic perhaps but I was curious.
I’ll stick with Bosch.

Started this morning after leaving it for 2 days. Oil light went out much quicker and back to normal.

As Baggydave has found out as well, don’t buy crap filters. 👍
