Admin, this is for car insurance, please move if inappropriate.

I have a four year old VW T-Roc R Line for which I have just received the renewal notice from the current insurer, in round figures just less than £350.

Yesterday a local NFU office, who I have requested quotes from in the past, rang offering to quote for the above renewal. Their quote was in the region of £1250, almost four times more than the current company. They really don't live on the same planet as the rest of us.

In the past I have had quotes from the NFU both for our camper and for the above car and every time they have been eye wateringly high compared to other companies.

And just to add a bit of balance we have two cars and the Morelo with NFU and the premium went down this year, the Morelo is about £800 which is not bad considering the van is over worth £200k and one of the cars is a BMW

I have my MH insurance with them, it’s around £400 which isn’t bad, last year they asked if I’d like a quote for house insurance, the quote was about 3 times my current one.

That's 'cause they heard I pass by it regularly!:tounge:

See, me subsidising Graham's work for you has it's pitfalls!:X3:

Just renewed my Skoda Karoq. As I am 80 this year I thought Saga may be a good place to start. Basic comprehensive policy but with quite high excess they quoted £1350.
Went with Direct Line, their Premium policy with all the extras: breakdown, legal, NCB etc £418.

Just an added note on NFU.
I nearly took a policy with them the start of this month.

However on trying to confirm the 180 day euro cover I had spoken about with the agent earlier I came a cropper 😔.

He checked with there underwriters and yes 180 days per year but their policies are not for 180 days in a row!

They would not give an exact amount of days but definitely not for example a couple of months duration , possibly a month or so at a time I was told 🤷.

I asked for confirmation of this as I couldn't find it in the policy details after reading them all and call was recorded so on record as being told this.

Back on topic , as they do a multi policy I asked about my car £489 🤷.

I insured it elsewhere for £141😁.

Cheers Cris 🍻

I insure my van with NFU and they were the cheapest, even went down for this year's renewal. House insurance, on the other hand, was extortionate.

NFU branches are privately owned franchised businesses and some of them seem to behave very differently than others. I use the Brockenhurst office and have found them reasonable and very helpful. Others speak highly of the Chichester office. I suggest only approaching branches that others have recommended. NFU prices are very post code sensitive, some post codes attract very high premiums.

I’m finding this thread useful as I am currently with LV= who have Told me that they will not be insuring me next June as they are unable to insure motorhomes as lots of others have been told over the last couple of years I suppose my surname starts with W so near the end of the list so lasted a bit longer than most.
I’m in a bit of a quandary as to who to use and NFU was on my list to try, I haven’t heard anything from the broker LV have said will be in touch shortly.
Looks like I have a lot work to do 🙄

01590 624744 will get you to the NFU office I use at Brockenhurst. 01243 887641 should get you through to the Chichester branch. Both have good reputations for motorhome business.

As chaser says NFU are good when it comes to claims and that is when it matters most. Saving a few £s on renewal matters less to me than being dealt with fairly.

Thanks chaser Pausim I totally agree that’s why I stuck with LV so long they are great when it comes to a claim I wrote off a car with them and they paid out within two weeks. I will certainly give them a call when it’s closer to renewal.🙄👍

I told the lass who rang me just that and she insisted that they all quote from the same database and I would never get a different quote from another office.

Please let us know how you get on.

I got a motorhome quote from NFU (from memory, Stranraer) in 2025. It was c 4x the renewal quote from Comfort!

NFU Perth quoted me c £80 more than the Comfort renewal a couple of months ago!

Both were excluding breakdown which is included in Comfort.

It's always been the case that you need to shop around for insurance if they all charged the same people would say it was unfair practice and price fixing!

I got a quote from them for the MH recently. They were the most expensive out of Ripe, Comfort, CAMC and Caravan Guard.

It was top notch cover though and the agent on the phone was at pains to explain this before he revealed the rather high price.

NFU also have this strange habit of rewarding loyalty, the mutual bonus which is deducted from renewals grows with length of policy. Quite a contrast with heavily discounting the first quote and then relying on customer inertia when recovering the initial losses with subsequent increases.

Is that irrespective of claims or just in effect a no claims bonus?

Insurance is a mysterious dark art, gave up years ago trying to work out any form of logic to how it operates. Best not to dwell on rhyme or reason. Ask the price, check what’s covered for the price and if you’re happy pay the premium. Comparing prices between companies or similar vehicle for other owners is a lost cause. Way too many variables in the calculations and appetite for risk based on daily changing algorithms and calculations only adds to time wasting. Make the call, check the price for the cover, pay the premium if happy and move on.

NFU we're ⅔ the price of Comfort also Comfort wanted alarm & tracker neither require by NFU so they were way cheaper.

I haven’t made a claim recently but the bonus appears as a separate calculation on the invoice and appears to have nothing to do with claims. It is a mutual bonus based on years.

Just an aside to nfu home insurance, if you have home insurance with them you get holiday insurance included for about £20 this is not breakdown but health or theft or whatever.

Any insurance company that only do phone quotes is not getting my Dosh - life is way too short to go through the same 100 questions before giving you a quote that is way higher than anywhere else so you then spend another 1/2hr haggling before saying it's still not competitive enough anyway
