I have purchased a Nextbase 312GW. It comes with the usual cigarette lighter lead and a USB style sync cable. My vehicle is a 2017 Ducato and the dash is equipped with a 12v cigarette socket and a 12v USB socket. I was going to hardwire it in (and still may) but I can get a fairly neat installation using the USB sync cable to the USB socket. It seems to power up and record OK.

I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts if this would be OK as I assume the sync cable isn't really designed to be used in this way.

Assuming there aren't any issues and I suffered some interference would it be OK to use the ferrite core on this cable?

Thanks in advance.

I've just done the same job. Didn't use a Nextbase, though, as it would have interfered with closing the blinds. Have you overcome this?

Wyn

In the current position just swing the camera forward and the blinds will close as there is more clearance lower down the screen. They even close with the cable in place but obviously leave a very small gap. In practice I will probably pull out the cable before closing the blinds.

Did you use the same cable as me?

Be careful that you are not contravening the windscreen obscuration rules.

Thanks. Very helpful.

Yes I had wondered about this and may move it to the dash and have ordered a stick on GPS disc to cut to size and fit in one on the depressions in the dash. Installation will be the same though so still interested if anyone has any opinions/advice.

We have our upside down on the dashboard. Works well and the blinds are not an issue

I used one of these:-

Amazon product ASIN B071ZKVD4S
It fitted nicely on the dash without interfering with the blind, is quite discrete and can be accessed by my phone or taking out the SD card.

It worked fine by connecting a USB lead to the USB outlet but to utilise the cigar lighter socket (which I have no use for) I put a USB adaptor into it so it powers the dashcam also gave me an additional USB outlet.

p.s. might get some pictures later.

We hard wired ours
One less wire down the dash
About half an hour to fit
Still have at the bottom of the screen rather than the top though
No reason why it will not work off your usb plug if you want to keep it that way though

I did order the hard wire kit and wondered if I could be bothered but if that's all it takes I may well give it a go.

Hi Jules, we have a few Next Base products but for the MoHo the camera unit is mounted where the rear view mirror would be. I position it there as I can then get a slightly downward view in front (and to the side) of the bonnet.

It's plugged in via the USB socket and if I need to remove it then it takes all of 2-seconds to pop the sucker. That said, we never use the blinds - just the silver screen.

All the best,

Andrew

I have that dashcam, but hard wired it behind the rear view mirror, thus I am good on the window obscuration laws. I just used the wires that were already there for the rear view camera to grab a 12v supply.

To answer your original question, I have a Nextbase & yes, it's ok to power it off the USB socket, but better if you can hard wire it, as long as it switches off when you remove the ignition key so it doesn't drain the battery, unless you want the bump feature working, which I haven't used yet so not sure if it uses power all the time.

May be a stupid question but with the camera that far down the window might the unit overheat/get too hot when the blowers are on.

I had the same over heating issue on a road angel I used to use when close to the dash.

I now realise that this position will not comply with legislation. See post further up. I will therefore be moving it to the dashboard.
