Has anyone else come across this? my Morrisons won't allow motorhomes or campers to fill up with LPG, fortunately for me, I haven't come across this with other garages so far.

While they persist with this I no longer shop there , it's so annoying as its convenient to me.

Its a headache for all Garages as habitation Gas is 5% vat, and road Fuel Gas is 20% Vat,
they are not allowed to charge over the top without falling out with the Vat Man
so you might see why some dont want to know Mo HO especially those that may have complained
Some just dont care either way as there happy to charge and pay vat at the same road rate

LPG stations as as rare as rocking horse near Camberley Surrey, I am always happy to pay any asking price(give or take 10P) these days to get a chance to fill up!
All the morrisons shops down here that have Fuel, dont offer LPG, which is a bit strange init?

A couple of years ago I met Mrs Ar$ehole at Morrisons.
I suppose I shouldn't have asked if I could have some help in filling as I was a newbie at the Gaslow scheme of things.
She switched off the Gas tank and walked into the back room to prevent me from continuing with the conversation.

Since then, and since I now know what I'm doing etc. I've been back and filled up, no problems.

It's not as we're asking for discount is it.?

Finding LPG is easier with two apps. "My LPG" and "Fill LPG". Morrison's had some sort of incident with someone trying to fill a standard bottle so issued instructions to staff not to fill them (after all forecourt staff can't be expected to tell refillables from exchange bottles). Not all forecourts comply. Filling at gas supplier businesses will not attract the same VAT as garages who have to tax it as 'vehicle propulsion' rather than 'Domestic cooking and heating'. Calor make HUGE profits on their monopoly of exchange bottles!

I think that quite few people have experienced this, following an incident whereby someone had a fire whilst filling their LPG tank. Morrison’s view was that their staff were not sufficiently trained to determine if LPG was being filled safely or not and thus banned motorhome filling.

They dont have to. it's actually an offence to overcharge vat more than the due rate
but separating the two and then trying to convince the vat man that half your sales were only charged at 5%
would have a vat inspection every week:Eeek:

I have answered this a number of times before when the same issue with Morrison’s has been posted.
We always fill up at Morrison’s in Ipswich as do many other motorhomers. I have asked them before if there was any instructions from HO not to allow m/h’s to fill and was told they were not aware of any such instruction.
There is a Marquis branch just round the corner from Morrison’s who also fill with diesel and lpg there.
It seems to depend on the individual branch of Morrison’s.

Clarky.

Yes it's the same old story with Calor depots too we have had trouble at both Calor and Morrisons.

I am glad that you are not the only one as we find LPG a complete pain especially when we were running the Winnebago on it !
We now have Gaslow and I refill my own Calor cylinders or exchange the 19 kg if needed, we have 2x11 kg refillable and a 19kg , 13kg and 3x6kg Calor cylinders as don't like to run low .

Considering the savings I enjoy with my Gaslow setup vs exchangeable Calor cylinders I really don't worry about paying the extra 15% VAT.

if they cannot tell if a mh is being filled correctly then how would they know a car is? Anyway they should all have done a petroleum course just to work in the filling station which should encompass that.

you just charge as fuel and if it gets brought up then tell them to ascertain hoe they want it done and until they do it stays as it is

I think it may be to do with people filling actual bottles rather than using a gas hose socket. That seems to be what is read anyway

They can't that's why a fair number of people I know just fit an external filling point on their work van or car and fill Calor bottles .
A lot of canal boat boys do it along with full timers in caravans and motorhomes.
Winter lpg use full timing is on a scale most can't imagine.

I think the secret is to be ready to fill the 'van up without resorting to opening the Gas locker to turn off the bottle and pick up the gloves. (You all DO wear protective gloves to handle the Gas DON'T YOU!!"!)

That way, you're not drawing attention to yourself and giving the staff any cause to worry about shady goings on.a

I think you will find that the DIY heroes Silicone BOB and his band of PTFE bandits are far more dangerous than filling Calor bottles with an adaptor (y)

I turn off the gas before I go to the filling station, as for gloves, your kidding me , right?
No some of them really do wear gloves but then we have actually seen the ones that put overalls and gloves on to empty the toilet cassette? (y)

Appears to be a few not too far away.

Very wise to when gloves, as if you get any LPG on your skin (which can happen when connecting/disconnecting) it can cause serious burnes.
But only girls wear gloves (y)

Usually only a puff of gas but as it is mostly propane then gloves are a fairly good idea. Having said that, it is a precaution I never take, despite having worked for many years on refrigerated gas tankers!

What annoys me is the price that I have to pay locally at the BP station in Dover Western Docks. They lost supply a couple of months ago when the pice was at 60p pl then got more supplies, after they had put there in stock price up to 73p pl to preserve the stock.. The new stocks which it seems are plentiful now are staying at the high rate of 73p. This is just greed as the price on the motorways is not that high.
Gas is one of those items that they can charge according to the local competition, which here is zilch.

Another vote for MyLPG and FillLPG.

We mostly fill up when we see an LPG outlet and the gauge is at the lower part of the green. Don't worry about the price too much as for the amount we use it makes very little difference.

I worked at East Grinstead Burns unit for a time. Fuel burns ,especially from liquid gases were tricky to treat as it causes instant full depth frostbite. I know it is only a small puff of gas given off but if the valve in your setup is faulty you could be enveloped in liquid gas cloud. your hands are the first thing to stop you being disabled from tightening the nozzle again to stop it. Frozen hands leading to major leak. Doesn't bear thinking about it really .
