Alternatively, you could use LibreOffice, OpenOffice, etc which are free and give virtually all the functionality of MS Office.

Oh! Why? Is the online excel feature limited?
The cloud content is secure. Unless the user shares his account credentials.

My customers who to move the cloud version of my employer’s on premise product lose my setup and troubleshooting skills.
Mainly as there is no access to their computer when it’s cloud based.

Another vote for Libreoffice.

Prefer to use alternatives to Microsoft after they started messing user interfaces about for the sake of it.
