I passed my driving test in 1977 so have 7.5T entitlement. Ten years ago I passed my HGV. Both me and the wives licence are up for renewal now. The wife did hers on line but I could not do mine on line because of the HGV. I need a HGV medical.(every five years) I am not bothered about keeping my HGV anymore, so the question is. If I just fill out the forms and surrender my HGV will I still keep my licence as it was before with my 7.5T entitlement. I know when I get to 70 years of age I will have to have a medical to keep it.

As far as I know you keep it but can’t use it until you have had a medical and complete the cpc course, but that’s for comercial use.

Unless things have changed we both let our Class one licences lapse and they were replaced by licences which had C1 on them. We were both in our 60s then. On reaching 70 we then needed a 3 yearly medical to retain our C1 to allow us to drive over 3.5 tonnes.
Be aware that DVLA do not send out the correct forms at 70. If you complete the form they send you then your licence will come back without the C1.entitlement.

There is a box on the renewal form to keep lorry & bus entitlement. My wife gave up her C when she was 70 by not ticking the box as we still had the Flair and saw no need for the continuing annual D4 preferring to just retain her C1. Then we bought the Morelo so she made application to reinstate her C which was approved at 72. So swapping in and out seems perfectly practical, with one proviso, my wife had a very intensive eye exam, requested by the DVLA when she first applied for her C 8 years ago and this was not repeated during her annual D4 applications subsequently. However upon her reinstatement request they did ask for the same level of examination again. We will see what happens this February at renewal. But the suggestion is that if you have any questionable health issues that have been examined in the past by the DVLA, abdicating your C and then reinstating it may task them to examine the issues in depth again before reinstatement.

I let my 7 tonne entitlement go when I was told I had to pay £150 for a medical. I'm driving a 3,5 tonne Convoy at the moment, so I decided I didn't need the extra rating. However, I may have to review that, as I've been told I need the extra rating if I want to row a trailer behind the van.

DR4Drivers...... £50 :)

And yes, Mikey RV, if you wish to retain your C1 ( over 3.5t ) you will need to take an eye test and medical and fill out a D4 form

I lost sight in one eye, but my licence had hgv on it subject to passing a medical, the next time I renewed it wasn't on it. ?
Since changing to a Spanish licence I only have a 3.5 t licence. ? Bob.

Ps I think if you surrender your licence, according to a search I did is you have 10 years to re apply if you decided you wanted to keep it subject to a medical. ?

Do you mean when I am 70, not now as I am only renewing my licence because it’s ten years old so need another photo.

If you search online for a D4 medical you can get 1 for about £50, I had 1 in Derby for £50
