Evening, we have an Iveco 65 15 motorsport camper, we got an alternator and exhaust renewed last year, we noticed shortly after that we get a high pitched rattle/ whistle the the engine is under load higher in the rev range. Our mechanic has ruled out the alternator and any turbo issue but says it may be the exhaust (which was not genuine) Is this a likely scenario before we lay out for another silencer or is he stringing along? Any help would be appreciated as it is very annoying and is actually quite loud.

I've heard of this a couple of times, Whistles like that are likely something to do with a leak in a turbo hose

You can get this with unflat surfaces either on the turbo, exhaust manifold, or down pipe. Especially when the turbo is working hard. Had it a few times. It’s a very high pitched sound like belt slip/squealing.

Thanks Jim, all the hoses are ok and turbo has been checked, and Thanks Andy, i should say it is more rattle than a whistle without wanting to sound confusing

are you talking about injector rattle? put the engine under load at high revs and it sounds like marbles in a wooden box. some engines its a high pitched rattle, but the same thing

Thanks Mr Big1, I would say its a much higher pitch than that, when we first heard it I thought it sounded like a small bearing rattle or a piece of tin foil flapping in the wind. It happens all the time and in the correct gear and will be in sync with the engine revs, I think I know what your on about as Transits are or were renowned for that noise under load.

It might pay to get your max boost pressure checked as sometimes at high boost you can get a whine from the turbo , I have noticed it on a couple of vehicles with variable vane turbos when the vanes get sticky due to carbon ., and over boost . You can also get a whine when the turbo is getting a bit old and tired .

Can your mechanic disconnect the silencer and see if it still makes the whine/rattle ?
A friend of mine fitted an exhaust to his car and used lots of "Gun Gum" on the joints. About a week later, it started making a very loud whistling sound as he revved it. When he took the exhaust off, a pebble sized lump of hardened Gun Gum fell out that had been acting like the "pea" in a whistle !

Thanks all, I took the silencer off tonight and ran it up the road, despite what my "mechanic" said it is definitely the turbo, the whine/whistle was unmistakeable and is just turned into a different tone when we put the silencer on. No leaks or split pipes so is the turbo knackered?

As long as your turbo can reach the required level of boost , (and not overboost) they can often last quite a while after getting a bit whistly :) Tho its an unknown , you can get your turbo rebuilt .

I had a turbo gasket go a month after fitting new turbos on a rrs , this sounded like a continuous high pitched pigeon under hard acceleration
