A note to others.
Skip to the end for cause and fix.
Our water pump was intermittently coming on for no apparent reason late yesterday evening gone 11pm.
After a long day travelling had a quick check for leaks no luck there so turned it off.
I had taken out our mains electric water heater last winter to try and fix it with success I might add so suspected a leak there maybe.
This morning woke up early thinking about it and thought wonder if anything has nudged the water heater drain dump valve.
Had to wait for the boss to wake up as it’s under the bed.
Great she needed the loo fairly early, off with the bed and all.

Sure enough the jumper cables had decided to rest them selves on top of the valve.
It surprisingly is very sensitive to the slightest of touches, releasing enough pressure in the system to trigger the pump

A few weeks ago our water pump was running all the time and then I realised that this was after the system had been drained down for storage and we had used the taps in the kitchen and also the toilet flush but hadn't yet run the taps in the bathroom. Once the air had passed through and all the taps were flowing freely the pump only ran when a tap was open. I also noticed that running the taps to remove the air uses about 20L of water.
