In Dundee, Scotland, carry on to Shetlands?

Stopped near St Andrews, considering changing our northern Scotland tour to include the Shetlands. I assume ferry from Aberdeen to Lerwick. Is that the most obvious route or can we go Orkneys to Shetland? Any tips on keeping the cost under control, we are in the Camping and Caravan Club.

You can do Orkney to Shetland.

We nearly went to Shetland, Orkneys much closer and cheaper so we went there instead.

The ferry to Shetland wasn’t cheap.
