Well here we are 2 weeks into our new Burstner Lyseo. On a C&MC site in Dorset where we’ve been before in our Chausson. The odd thing is that very few people have spoken or even returned a good morning since we arrived last week. No idea why other than the change of van. Am I over thinking this or do people have an aversion to seeing relatively young people(58 and 60) in a new Burstner?

Not really - still as sociable as ever.

I will talk to you (y) there again I will talk to anybody;)

On a serious not I have heard other people say that the posher the van the less people talk to them.

Martin

Its not really a posh van compared to many we’ve seen.

There are lots of crocs and socks here though!

I hate rudeness, many years ago if a greeting wasn’t returned I would get angry and Id not be able to leave it, I’d invariably offer another greeting almost as a challenge, daring them to ignore me a second time. But over the years Sian calmed me down and it doesn’t worry me at all. I’m now of the opinion that If someone is ignorant enough not to return a good morning, then be thankful they don’t want a conversation.

Funny thing is as I’ve mellowed over the years, Sian has got stroppier :D

Yes, inverted snobbery is alive and kicking!

I remember someone on this forum saying they don't read threads if the person who started it has, in their opinion, a 'gin palace'!

you want to try rolling up at a c&mc site in a converted ambulance , see how many speak to you then, but seriously , we have found the british the most stand off anywhere , if you draw on a french aire the english do their best to ignore you whereas the other euros go out of their way to speak to you.

We get it quite regular as having an 18 plate bailey. We also get "is that your parents mh" or " your lucky that your parents borrow you their van"
We are 39 and 37.
This was when we had the original reg plate. It's one of the reasons we got a private/vanity plate to disguise the fact that it was brand new. As soon as the vanity plate went on a few more people would acknowledge our good mornings and we dont get the parent comments anymore.

Exactly what I found in France and Spain over the last 9 weeks

We always try and talk to people but apart from the ‘good mornings’ C&MC members are not very talkative.

I sit and cook outside as much as possible, coffee outside first thing, beer in the afternoon and then more beer, wine or gin in the evening. Who knows, maybe people avoid us :drinks:

Maybe because we are younger (although not that young), even Jim said I looked a bit young to be a motorhomer when I met him at the Peterborough show

Used to find the same in Hymers even had the comment "your the people in that posh van". Appears to be a Brit thing, don't bother with the UK now so it doesn't happen, even the Brits talk to us abroad.

To be fair though Paul, neither of you even look your ages:D

Could it be that you have the latest No. Plate.

They just might be prejudging you.

We have a new Burstner Lyseo too, we also have French plates. Double the reason for Brits ignoring us! (Actually, mainly the English ignore us, you can’t stop Welsh people from having a chat!)
No such behaviour when we are back on the Continent though. Even the Belgians talk to us!

Same with cars. I ran a shiny Porsche Turbo for a while, cost me £19k. Neighbours who'd blown £40k on their dullsmobiles still thought we were super rich.
The same effect can be had by buying a Bargain Barge for £1k like an old BMW 740 or Audi A8.

Turn up in a new £50k BMW and no one bats an eyelid, turn up in something 'flash' at half the price and you're a millionaire.
Real millionaires drive battered 4x4 Subararu estates of course :)
The owner of Wilko's regularly visits his shops to see how they are doing and tidies up the odd shelf, no one notices him, too many people go by appearances.

People are also poor at basic maths, it can be cheaper to buy something new, use it and then sell it on than to buy/build/maintain an old heap. Some even manage it with limited edition Aston Martin's and Porsches - flipping them on for a profit after enjoying a new car for a few weeks/months. A friend of mine has around 30 old knackered cars, but doesn't want to 'waste money' on a new one.

The same with self-builds, not always cheaper. People were buying VW Californias, using them for a year and selling them for what they paid: a year's free camper vanning, meanwhile most selfbuilds have several £k in them and are tricky to sell. I know this because I've tried it too!

Absolutely , and yet they wear their bloody arms off waving to you when you're on the road or speak to you as you are about to leave.

spot on , iv gone on sites and seen vans with fun stickers on and having going across to them to have a word , say something like , i see you are a funster and they look at you as if you are talking Chinese, point out the sticker, they come up with, oh i dont have anything to do with that now, oh i dont use computers, oh that, it was in when we bought it, oh we dont use aires really, we are just on our way to our villa.
no kidding iv heard it all

i know this is diverting the thread a bit but the best people i have found to talk to is the hippy types in old converted freezer vans and the like who are parked up in the corner of sites, also someone mentioned Belgians in jest but have always found them very friendly, and they are mostly bilingual which helps if you are having a problem with a sign or something.

I noticed with the American Coach RV people have a good gander even sidling by trying to have a peak inside , taking a circular path , easily viewing them unnoticed from inside . I would on occasion pop outside , but it was extremely rare that any interaction started especially in UK . I used to get more queries etc when on the scooter :wondering:
