Friend has a Y registered Hymer he wants to change his fluorescents to LED but thinks they run on 240 as well 12v.
I thought the 240 powered the leisure battery to supply the lighting A class 544 thanks in advance.

The actual fluorescent tube needs a high voltage to work. This is normally supplied from a little 12V inverter built into the light fitting. So the only supply to the light fitting is 12V. You are right that normally lighting runs off the 12V battery, and the EHU runs a mains charger that tops up the battery.

I had fluorescent strips in a past van. They should be supplied by a 12v feed and as mentioned they have a small inverter.

What I did was, remove the tubes, located the 12v supply BEFORE it went into the fitting. Then connected into that with some led strip lights. I left the original fitting as a backup plus to save leaving any holes etc.

In my 2001 Hymer Y reg, I’ve changed all the fluorescent tubes Which run off 12 volt for LED strip. I removed all the control gear and tube fixing and stuck LED strip to base of the original fittings. Easy job but I used water proof LED which has discoloured, i think I would use normal strip next time. ( note I did put 2 strips in but removed one because it too bright.)
