……in the garden this morning! They’re about the same size as some humming birds, and bigger than others. Fascinating to watch….. (y)

Remember seeing them in a pub garden in Kent many years ago and was totally confused as to what it was. The most bird like moth I had ever seen. Had to look it up to find out exactly what it was!

And while we are on Hawk Moths in general we had a caterpillar on the drive last week which I think might have been the Hummingbird Hawk Moth but I didn't get a photo as was dashing out and more interested in not running it over with the car, but a few years ago got some pictures of a relative of it which I believe is a Elephant Hawk Moth Caterpillar,

Only seen one in my garden and that was more than 10 years ago. So few butterflies and larger moths around this year.

This morning I saw a Hummingbird Hawk Moth on my big Buddleya. A rare sight. Too far away for a photo, but I managed to watch it for about 5 minutes with binoculars while it tasted every flower group with its uncoiled proboscis. Then it flew away at high speed. Fastest moth ever!

We had a Hummingbird Moth in our dining room last week, the buddleia bush is just outside the door. Only seen one once before years ago.
