The stays on our van kitchen window have both failed (they no longer keep the window open) so I want to replace them.
As the photo shows (hopefully) one end of the stay is fixed to the window itself. Is there a technique for removing the stay from the window? I’m reluctant to set about it with a screw driver in case I scratch the window.
Thanks

If I remember correctly. You unscrew the end from the window frame and the part on the window slides up and leaves a runner on the window

Have they stopped staying open when you retighten the hand screw in the open position?

Yes, that properly describes the problem.

I was under the impression the hydraulic arm was only to allow easy opening and hold open while the screw was tightened to hold in place. Although annoying the stay isn’t fully operational I’m not sure why they wouldn’t stay open after tightening.

That looks possible. I’d assumed that the whole thing was one integral unit. As it’s pouring down at the moment, won’t have a look. In any even, I’ll need to buy replacement stays.

Just had a quick look. As lunarman says, it looks like the runner will stay on the window.
I think that the problem was caused by previous owner opening and closing the window without unscrewing the the catch. It doesn’t hold the window open even when the screw is tightened. The window just slides shut.

Sounds like the inside rod is squashed or the screw worn down at the end (or both)

Oh well, new stays it is then. As they’re for a motorhome, I expect prices to start at £500 plus vat. 🙄

You would be better off getting proper ones. Those as £500 + never last long imho :giggle:

Worth taking one off and taking a look to see if you can identify an easy fix.

If it is only the screw bit that has failed, I have replaced that bit without a new stay, mine are not hydraulic stays but apart from that they look the same

I have these on my PVC and can't see how they do not work. They are a very basic screw clamp. It must be worth getting them off and looking to see what is wrong. It cannot be anything complicated.

I agree with you. I fail to see why they don’t work and don’t care about the hydraulic piston. So long as I can keep the window open would be good. It’s at the kitchen end of the van and it’s good to have it open when cooking in the summer. At the moment we have to jam a bottle or something in.

Try swapping bits from a working window until you find the faulty part.

they slide off, the runner stays on the window, very easy to do, but I cannot remember how I did it!
