In preparation of our forthcoming trip to France, I was downloading books for reading on my Kindle. I bought an ebook on my ipad and when I’d paid, it offered three alternatives for the format. I chose MOBI as this stated it’s suitable for reading on Kindle. So I’ve downloaded this book expecting to be offered a choice of downloading to my Kindle or other device.
No such choice. So my question is can I transfer the book which is in Files on my ipad, to my Kindle and if so, how to do it. I really don’t want to read it on my ipad using the Kimdle app.
Not sure why I wasn’t offered a choice of devices with which to download.

Can you email it to your kindle account email address?

As an attachment? I believe I do have a kindle email address but wouldn’t know where to find it. I’ll play around with my Kindle to see if the email address is in there somewhere.

Use the Calbre app, it's free.
I was going to say the same you can download books from any device change the format so you can read them on any e-reader.
It's a program that anyone with an egreader shouldn't be without.

I was surprised [but not surprised] that when you buy a book for your kindle, you don't actually buy it, nor own it... so if you close or delete your Amazon account, you lose access to your Kindle library.

The easiest way is to email it to your kindle email address or you could attach your kindle to your laptop and drag the file over.

Thank you all. I found my Kindle email address by going to Settings on my Kindle, then My account. There I found my Kindle email account. So sent an email there with the book attached and lo and behold, it’s there on my Kindle.

Which is why I download and remove DRM from every book I buy off Kindle.

Although earlier this year I did the Kindle Unlimited trial and checked to see if it was financially rewarding. After the trial I calculated I was saving quite a bit of money. It is very rare for me to go back and read a book again. So having a pretty much unlimited supply of books for my Kindle for a fixed price worked out really well for me. For series by authors that I really love I will still buy the book outright.

It is £7.99 a month and has a huge selection of books including a load of big serials. Well worth looking at if you are a big reader. Also the free trial might be a good one to take just before a holiday if you have no intention of doing it the rest of the year.

Gromett- what’s involved in removing the DRM? Is this lawful?

You need a Kindle device and Calibre software.

Lawful? I believe it is ok to back up your own digital media. I doubt there will be any court cases over this unless you start selling what you strip or start sharing it. It may still have ID'able information in the file even after the DRM has been removed.

PS: Please note I do not strip DRM from books I have borrowed from Kindle Unlimited only the ones I have fully bought.

Further to the interesting discussion on this subject, I’ve cut and pasted an email I received this morning from Kindle regarding what I did emailing a MOBI file to my Kindle email account:

Dear Kindle Customer, Thank you for using the Send to Kindle service to send personal documents to your Kindle library. We noticed that the following document(s), sent by you at 06:55 PM on Fri, Jul 15, 2022 GMT are in MOBI (.mobi, .azw) formats: * Destiny-Hudson-EPUB4-2207140712.mobi
We wanted to let you know that starting August 2022, you’ll no longer be able to send MOBI (.mobi, .azw) files to your Kindle library. Any MOBI files that are already in your library will not be affected by this change. MOBI is an older file format and won’t support the newest Kindle features for documents. Any existing MOBI files that you want to read with our most up-to-date features for documents will need to be re-sent in a compatible format. Compatible formats now include EPUB (.epub), which you can send to your library using your Send to Kindle email address. We’ll also be adding EPUB support to the free Kindle app for iOS and Android devices and the Send to Kindle desktop app for PC and Mac. If you have any questions, please visit our help page or contact our Customer Service team. Regards, Amazon Kindle Support

So it looks as if the writing’s on the wall for us older non-techie farts with our existing MOBI files!

Glad you have it sorted.

I would have suggested you went into your kindle library on amazon and sent it to your kindle from there.

But having re-read you didn't actually say you had bought from Amazon so I am probably talking a load of poo.

You’re correct. I didn’t buy it from Amazon. When you do buy from Amazon it usually gives an option of sending it to your Kindle. That’s what threw me. That’s becoming easier and easier to do!😀

There is not a version for android I don't think.

Just to build on this.

calibre for Android

calibre itself does not run on phones/tablets but you can connect to calibre running on your home computer, read books and manage your library in several ways.

Connect with a USB cable

Simply plug in your phone/tablet into the computer with calibre running on it. It will show up in calibre as a device and you can manage the books on it.

Connect wirelessly

You can connect to calibre using just Chrome or Firefox on the phone, and manage your collection and even read books in the browser, using the calibre Content server. To learn how to do this, see the User Manual.

This article from a couple of months back is worth a read.
Reading that article it appears when you email a book to your Kindle it goes via Amazon's servers and it's them that are blocking Mobi files. So I assume you could still download a Mobi file from Calibri without a problem.

As far as I know you can still transfer .mobi files from calibre to your Kindle (any version). However, I currently tend to load them as .AZW3 versions.
