Before I book a travel lodge I wondered if any locals who know the city have any thoughts …

Husband has been waiting coming up to 2 years for prostate Holmium Enucleation (HOLEP) treatment on NHS in Scotland and with no date in sight we’ve bitten the bullet and decided to use savings and go private. His appointment is in February at the Nuffield in Newcastle NE2 1JP.

I will drive him down there the night before, and back home hopefully the day after.

One of the advantages of taking the van is onboard toilet as services are few and far between on the journey and this could be a necessity on the way back.

Disadvantage is where to park up and driving in the city. There don’t seem to be any spots I’d feel comfortable staying in close proximity to the hospital and the carpark looks small on Google maps.

The other option is to stay a bit out and drive in in the morning. We don’t know his appointment time yet.

Any thoughts?

Both good ideas thank you …

Perhaps it would worthwhile contacting the hospital - they might just let you stay in the car park! Or know somewhere local!
Worth asking as in 3 Devon hospitals I have been allowed to stay overnigh & in Plymouth multiple nights, & also at one in somerset

Hi Grianan, I had exactly the same op at the Nuffield in June, can't speak highly enough of the treatment I received. Now 7 months in I feel like a new man, tell your husband it will be worth it. Hopefully you find somewhere to stay, Kevin

I took my DiL there last year, parking is very tight, only small car park if I remember. Being so close to the city, parking for the van will be difficult, if it were me I would look for premier inn / travel lodge.
PS there are 3 premier inns in the town, all within 3 miles of the Nuffield

Hi Kevin this is exactly what he needs to hear - thank you!

The Nuffield car park is no good at all. I struggle to get my car in there sometimes. There is a CL at Wylam and a Pubstop at Corbridge (S4S). Both are on the Tyne valley rail line and you will be in Newcastle in under 40 minutes. Another 20 minutes would get you to the Nuffield on the Metro.
If a hotel is what you end up with there are plenty on Osborne Road and a HI Express on Jesmond Road. Parking any motorhome in that are will be mission impossible I am afraid to say.
I hope all goes well.

PS
Decent real ale pub (The Boathouse) at Wylam. Plenty of good food, pubs and local shopping at Corbridge.

Recently taken over.

They don’t allow overnight stays in your motorhome though. I keep trying to persuade them to change. Hopefully the new owner can be though 😳

As HugoBNB says, I wouldn’t mess around driving in that area with a motorhome. You’ll find it frustrating especially given the reason for the trip. I rarely drive into town in the car now. It’s a real pain in the proverbial.

I’d recommend booking a cheap hotel or guest house close by and ease the stress.

Good luck though, hope everything goes well 🙏🙏

If you're really stuck, the Durham P&R has been mentioned more than once on here.
Perhaps that's worth investigating? 🤔

You could overnight at the Northumbrian Piper pubstop. https://www.searchforsites.co.uk/marker.php?id=50887
Short walk to the Metro. There is a Metro Station not too far from the Nuffield, if I recall correctly. Perhaps worth telephoning the pub, explaining what you want to do and asking for advice on using Public Transport. Alternatively, a Taxi or Uber may be an easier option. I very much doubt parking your MoHo at the Hospital is a viable option, but you could telephone them to ask.

L'hobo's suggestion is not bad. There is one at Belmont and another at Framwellgate. Train is about 15 minutes, then another 20,or so by Metro and walking.
I would not be staying at Fawdon. It is a busy area and I very much doubt that you would get a quiet night due to traffic.

Tynedale Rugby Club, next door The Dyvils pub. I would go for the RC. It keeps you well out of town.

When I was going to the Nuffield regularly (ten or eleven years ago) I needed to go in the moho on one occasion. I phoned them up the week previous and they put some cones out and saved me a space, but the car park is tight and on occasions when it was busy, it's almost impossible to park on the surrounding streets due to restrictions.

Not sure it's been mentioned here but Newcastle city centre has a clean air zone. Don't know where the boundaries are.

There’s a good stop on P4n at the Travelodge close to Gosforth park( not far from Jesmond hospital )no restrictions. Stay the night before and get a taxi to the hospital. It’s about a 3 mile journey. Probably an £8 trip.

Thanks - both camper and car are compliant but useful to know.

Based on all the above info I think we’ll travel by car and stay in either Gosforth or Cobalt Business Park Travel lodge.

I really appreciate all the replies - it’s so useful having relies from folk who know the area!

Just a heads up, but with some Travel Lodges I have used in the past, the earlier one books, the cheaper it is. Good luck! 🤞

Why dont you stay at a travelodge type hotel , travel there in motorhome park up go for treatment go back to hotel , stay night then travel back in motirhome , with your own loo .
That’s a good option pampam definitely worth thinking about - thank you.

But…..check your insurance permits you to leave your MoHo unoccupied overnight when away from normal location where it is kept. Some policies permit this for 48 hours, some do not, and some have no restriction.
