Hi guys normally would use the tunnel but it is same distance to us as Harwich. Have decided night crossings in 5 berth pet friendly cabin best option for us and our 2 pups as not into bunk beds.

We will head to Texel 1st for 4 nights then ontowards Copenhagen. Having read just how bad the Hamburg traffic gets I was thinking staying somewhere outside on the Saturday night then early drive through Hamburg early Sunday. Would do similar on the way back hitting Hamburg early on another Sunday morning.

What do you guys think on that? Alternatively we do not mind doing an additional stop due to a detour to avoid Hamburg and would appreciate any ideas.

Done Netherlands but will be 1st time to Denmark.

I did ask chat gpt and this was the preffered option they gave. Any comments on this route?

To avoid the Hamburg A7 bottleneck (which even when I lived there 30 years ago was a nightmare)
You need to cross the Elbe on the ferry between Wischhafen/Glukstat which runs every 15 minutes.

Ferry website here
It also gives live waiting times here

There was (or is??) also a ferry crossing between Cuxhaven and Brunsbuttle.
But I can't find any confirmation it's still running.

One minor little detail is missing.😊
Emsland to Flensburg, the River Elbe is in the way.

The only drivable crossings are in Hamburg and crossings to the east.

The only other way to cross the Elbe is the ferry between Wischhafen/Glukstat

Great, thanks for link

We've often done the Afluitsdijk route but in the car and stopped this side of the Elbe at a hotel in Cadenberge ready for the Wischafen ferry next morning, no doubt there are plenty of stellplatze in the vicinity. We have taken the Brunsbuttel ferry mentioned by Brains from Cuxhaven in the past but that went bust again last time I checked.

Very minor ;)

We did the Wischhafen/Glukstat ferry on the way up and down to avoid Hamburg we stayed at https://www.searchforsites.co.uk/marker.php?id=7362 once we crossed but there are plenty of Stellplatz in the area. Once further up into Scandinavia we found Search for Sites limited lots more options on Search 4 Sites especially Finland and Northern Norway.

Yeah makes sense to do the ferry both ways, I did notice I have a bunch of Stellpkatz to choose from on Search 4 Sites :)

ChatGPT suggested Groningen but the MH stopover there was closed when we went there last summer. There is a pleasant aire just past at Veendam. We skirted Hamburg to the south and visited Lubeck. If you are heading for Copenhagen and took this route you could use the Puttgarden ferry.

We’ve been to Copenhagen half a dozen times since 2017. Always keep it simple, autobahn past Bremen and Hamburg and on up to the puttgarden-Rodby ferry. Just two days from French coast.

We were planning to tootle about north western Germany and mainland Denmark this summer.

Is Hamburg ok to visit in MoHo - I.e. is just trying to bypass it quickly that’s the problem?

We stayed at a Knaus Camping site (https://www.knauscamp.de/en/hamburg) last year. Don't recall the traffic being too hectic. Visited the city (bus from outside the campsite and FREE travel card) and carried on to Lubeck and Poland.

Sounds good - we were planning to go from Bremen up to Hamburg and stop a couple of nights - sound horrible around there - we might swerve up via Bremerhaven up to the coast and come across to take this ferry instead - we are heading for Lubeck Rostock and Szczecin …

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this. Denmark, Sweden, Norway & Finland have very strict laws regarding dogs off-lead between around April to Sept due to nesting birds. We first got ticked off, at a remote beach in Denmark! Not sure where a bird will nest on a rocky beach, but hey ho! We therefore last departed mid August when they're starting to lighten up a bit!

The hippy part of Copenhagen is fun to stop at, if you can park. Stockholm is beautiful with lots of city parking spots.

hi guys! had to sign up to post, your thread has been very useful as we are travelling to Copenhagen via the ferry Harwich-Hook of Holland on May 30th. We have given ourselves 4 days to get to our destination in our 2011 Transporter so found the thread initially looking for places to stay. We have the search for sites app so will likely just use that.

sorry to hijack but - couple of questions!

are the any clean air zones on the way?
are service stations similar to those in France that welcome overnight stayers with access to showers etc?
are there any must see locations on the way?
has anyone stayed in Copenhagen itself? We are going to see a band on 4th June at Poolen, is there much to do around there?
Any other tips or advice? (we have seen the required items to carry!)

many thanks all!!!
