After recommendations for a mains powered SIM card router for home.

Bought a TP link 6400 and it is not very good, despite the reviews.

It keeps dropping out my Tesco SIM and the signal for my 3 SIM is very poor. Yet both work fine in the little portable Huawai 5577.

But it is battery powered and I don’t want to leave it plugged in all the time.

So would appreciate advice from Funsters experience please

Tesco don't support their sims for routers. Some get away with it, some like me don't.

I have been running TP link AC1200 with a Smarty data only sim (three network) for last couple of months as my home Internet and that's worked OK.

Been using the same router for a year now Graham, with a Vodafone sim card. We've not had a problem, and our data signal gives us treble the service our BT Broadband gave us, and with no buffering on streaming or catchup TV. We are also running several security devices from the signal, which never seems to drop out.

In comparison, the ID Mobile signal (Three) is pants, but the O2 signal is good.

Which provider gives the best signal strength for your area?

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Check that you are using the correct APN this is often the reason for poor connections and drop outs.

Using a Huawei B535-232 at home with a Vodafone Sim. Never had any issues with it dropping out & is now giving between 89-100+mbs.
Vodafone is by far the best provider where we live. Currently using in the van in Huntingdon.
Just purchased a Vodafone Gigacube which i am hoping will he as least as good as it offers 5g whereas the B535 is only 4g.

Hi Jock
My phones are all on Vodafone, works phones, and seem to be canny in the house.

If I put the O2 sim in the huawai, it works fine and has done for 6 months in both U.K. and when on holiday in France.
Put it in the TP link and it works for a while then drops out despite showing full internet reception on the indicators. Switch it off and on and it works for a while again.

Just got a 3 data sim and it works fine in the huawai but in the TP link it barely receives a signal. Same location as the huawai.

So think may be the TP link that is an issue. So was wondering find there is a better router out there

Was looking at this router. Thanks Howard 👍

APN = Access Point Name it's where the router looks to connect to, sometimes with Tesco sims the router will default to an O2 APN which may not connect at all or if it does may be erratic, I am not familiar with your router so you will need to research how to change the APN but you can find the settings at the link, you only need the ones you have fields for in your router.

My TP Link router is sat on a window sill, with the two antenna installed, and I am getting full signal strength.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Yep film strength with the Tesco sim bit only 1 bar at best with the 3 sim.
Huawai portable and 3 bars on both 😳

Will look at the settings as ChrisL has suggested, if I can figure out how to get to them in the first place. May be a scientist bit thick as mince with IT stiff 😂😂

Either way doesn’t explain the 3 sim. Which is the one I really want to be using

The issue may be one of geography, weather or network traffic, all those things will effect your connection, i have two devices on two different networks so if one doesn't work where I am the other usually will.

Can't you just have a docking station your house for the Huawai 5577 and use that for everything?

Not really as I said. Two routers side by side. Put the 3 sim in one and it works fine. Put in the other and it doesn’t

Ooo I like that idea.

Where would you get one from and how does that work as you need to remove the battery as that is the concern, about it being on permanent charge

We have just changed over about 3 months ago from Sky broadband to a TPLink Deco X50 5g with a Smarty SIM and are getting over 450 mbps

Our Huawai 5577 is permanently plugged in via the micro USB plug from the docking station supply so no issues being permanently on charge The docking station is a magnetic pad that needs a 12v charger so standard kit aswell.
We use ours the other way around to feed the house from the Moho via a couple of cheap WiFi repeaters

The docking station is something like this

So is the MiFi battery in permanently?

I setup a Huawei B535-333 for some neighbours, who are too remote to have a landline, it works great, it even has an rg11 socket so they have their DECT phones connected to it as well, the only slight hassle is you have to logon to the router to send or receive text messages.

Been using one of these for the last 3 years for our home WiFi needs, with a Vodafone unlimited data SIM (not a data only SIM, which for reasons I do not understand are more expensive than a “phone” SIM) and this has worked without problem………

Amazon product ASIN B07ZFSX8LB

I have a TP Link MR600 in the loft, with an unlimited Tesco sim. Has worked fine for a year.

I think that is basicly the same router that i have just mentioned but without the phone socket.
