Home insurance while your away (1 Viewer)

Just wondering who Funsters insure their houses and contents with when they are on long trips abroad.
Most Providers insure you for 30 away max but I’m looking for 3 months ish .

Have you asked your existing insurers?? If their limit is 30 days,they may extend that for an additional premium. Some companies may ask you to leave heating system drained down,as well as other security measures.

Mines a fairly standard (cheap) policy and it is 60 days. I think it was the longest I could find.

If you check the wording of your policy it's possible you could get away with someone coming to stay for a day once a month.

Whatever company the CMHC use (Devitt?) provide extended coverage for members - normally 60 days extended to 90 days.

I think Clubcare is the Camping and Caravan Club and I believe the Caravan and Motorhome Club also have a similar provision.

We use Aviva for our home insurance, before we spent 10 weeks away this year I phoned them and updated the unoccupied period to 90 days - cost around £25 extra on the premium. There were no other requirements such as weekly inspections.
With regards to heating shut downs, whilst our oil fired boiler was being serviced last week, I asked the engineer his advice. His experience of boilers being shut down for long periods was that on start-up the pump impeller is sometimes found to be seized - something not welcome if returning in Autumn after a long break. This justified our decision to leave our boiler on, albeit with the temps turned right down.

Certainly familiar with the impeller problem - coastal location with salty air. Impeller corrodes on shaft and generally breaks when attempting to separate. My solution is a smart heating control (Wiser) to periodically fire up the oil boiler from wherever I happen to be.

I suggest you have a good read of the below threads - the major issue is not only getting more than 60 days' cover but what the extra days are actually covered for ... when you go over 60 sometimes you have restrictions on what is actually covered as I found. In the end we decided to stick at 60 days:

Home Insurance, 90 days unoccupancy period

Got my CMC home insurance renewal in and noted that their advertised “automatic” 90 day unoccupancy period is now 60 days unless you state you want more. Having done that premium has jumped from £195 to £259. If you have CMC cover beware as I almost missed that on the renewal papers. Now...
