Ive looked at previous threads, but remain confused.

Relying on French postcodes is no good as they cover such a large area.

We are both incompetent with technology. Can read a map,but want to master this subject.

Please can somebody give me an idiots guide, step by step, on how to put in the various ways co- ordinates are expressed. We would want to be able to put them in the way they are set out in All the Aires,CCC,C&MC. Hopefully this would also cover
Park4night,and Search for Sites.

And I really do mean “idiots guide”.

TIA.

I have the same model.. but rather than me fumble through...

Copied from instructions..

Step 1
Power on your Garmin road device and touch "Where To?" to view the destination options.

Step 2
Press the down arrow key and touch "Coordinates." If you do not see Coordinates, touch "Categories" first and then select "Coordinates."

Step 3
Enter the coordinates in the Latitude and Longitude boxes. Touch the "Format" button, which resembles three horizontal bars, to select a different coordinate format if desired.

Step 4
Touch "View on Map" to preview the coordinates on a map. Touch "Next" when you are finished and touch "Go" to receive directions to the coordinates.

The problem is there are different types of coordinates in use, (as Jim has pointed out), GB ordnance survey is useless when not in the UK.

You'll have to change format depending on what guide you are using.. it's a bit of a nuisance if you're new to satnavs.

I have a Dezl that uses same , where to page , scroll down to see pic of globe , tap that.
Next screen will show box already filled in with current location , just tap and then over type, be careful with second box to put enough 0's before digit E or W . The other thing is make sure you are using like for like coordinate figures. eg google maps uses
eg 049.987987 006.987678 or 52° 31' 24.348'' N 13° 24' 41.184'' E
you can use just select from list which you are using HTSH

ps you might find this site uesful for converting one to another https://www.latlong.net/lat-long-dms.html

I think the tricky bit is the second part of step 3. which often needs to be done before entering the coordinates. :)

In order to select the correct format you need firstly to be able to recognise the format when you see it written down.

Secondly, you need to select this format when faced with the multiple choice to choose from those the satnav offers.

There must be an opening for a YouTube video on it. :)

Yes, we’ve been on u tube and the duchess declared it was “b***** useless. So maybe someone will do it.

I've had a long day wrestling with a computer today so my brain's a bit exhausted. :)
I'll try and post some hints tomorrow if no one does it before then. :)

The supported formats of interest are:
  • h ddd.ddddd° Latitude and Longitude in Degrees only.
  • h ddd° mm.mmm’ Latitude and Longitude in Degrees and Minutes only.
  • h ddd° mm’ ss.s” Latitude and Longitude in Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds.
h-hemisphere (N,S,E,W), d-degrees, m-minutes, s-seconds

If the locations give more digits than you have room for, ignore the last digits (or you can round if you want, but the difference is negligible). If they don't give enough digits, use zero for the last digits. If + or - is given rather than NSEW then + is N for latitude and E for longitude.

All The Aires uses h ddd° mm.mmm’ Latitude and Longitude in Degrees and Minutes only.
Example: Lathus St Remy (Poitou 35 in All The Aires South 2nd edition):

N 46 19.974
E 000 57.431

Camping and Caravanning Club uses h ddd.ddddd° Latitude and Longitude in Degrees only.
Example: Ashbourne (Latitude: 53.01920 Longitude: -1.64911)

N 53.01920
W 001.64911

Caravan and Motorhome Club appear to use the same format as CCC

Park4Night uses h ddd° mm’ ss.s” Latitude and Longitude in Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds.
and h ddd.ddddd° Latitude and Longitude in Degrees only.
Example: Lathus St Remy (GPS :N 46°19’54.9768” E 0°57’26.7624”
46.331938,0.957434)

N 46° 19’ 54.9”
E 000° 57’ 26.76”

or

N 46.33193
E 000.95743

SearchForSites uses h ddd.ddddd° Latitude and Longitude in Degrees only.
and h ddd° mm.mmm’ Latitude and Longitude in Degrees and Minutes only.

Example: Lathus St Remy (46.33243, 0.95717
N46° 19.946' E0° 57.43')

N 46.33243
E 000.95717

or

N 46° 19.946'
E 000° 57.430'

Hope that helps, and hopefully I haven't made any mistakes!

I use an app for an iphone called GPS Format Converter. Type in the co-ordinates specified by the ‘campsite’ and it gives you all the options to suit any particular sat nav. The Fiat standard Sat Nav only seems to accept one format as far as I’m aware. Don’t know about your Garmin but I hope this may help.

Many thanks for all this,Funsters. I say again...what a great bunch you lot are!
A bit knackered at the mo,so will be looking at this on Friday, when the grandchildren have gone!.

Well, after about an hour of study, note writing, and the duchess pressing the buttons........we’ve cracked it!!
Thanks to all,especially @scotjimland , @klaatu , and also @Justamil on a similar thread under Tech/Mech.
I’m now an expert on co-ordinates,and can even convert them manually, lol.
Now,the world is our lobster!
