Learning to appreciate what time we have left
Hi Guys..

A friend of ours has recently taken on an Auto Trail Delaware . I think it's a 2014?
The door that for the Loo and the bedroom (I believe it shuts off the lounge when in use with another couple on board?) has a Plastic long brown type of hinge . This has been cracked or even just given up the ghost! I also believe it is a full length type?
Any Ideas where these can be obtained from apart from Auto-Trail themselves at all please?

Kindest regards Kev and Carolyn

O,Leary’s and magnums must be worth a shout. Is AT spares completely shut as well as the factory ?

It’s not a straight hinge is it . It’s more of a Z hinge.

How much!!!!!!!?!. When we had our first tap go I got one almost the same from a caravan repair place at a reduced cost. When the next one went I got one which looks identical for a fraction of the cost at Screwfix!!

I got one from Autotrail under warranty and it came rolled up which surprised me.
Not much help I know but I was expecting a long thing the height of the door.
It was the hinge flattened and rolled up- worked perfectly when I unrolled and fitted.

Yes it looks like the ones that hold piano lids on or am I looking at the wrong thing? My Hobby had something similar and was treated to a full length hinge, they come in Brass, chrome or aluminium finish or can be painted and are a flat fit, is that not what is required......I will get my glasses on and have another look I take it it is the full length hinge to the left of the towel holder?

Just a thought but would individual z hinges work, say 4 or 5 down the length of the door

I guess it would take some doing to get them all exactly in line, or they would twist against each other. Might be why they do it as one long hinge.

I don’t think so the hinges as stated would not provide a good fixing and leave gaps on the hinge side
this is the problem with motor home fitting . The company make then to fit then stop making them when it suits them or they Change the design

If you take your time (something we have at the moment) you will be fine.

I had the same trouble with both my Autotrails. I'd like to point out that it's not a hinge but just a screen to cover the wider gap between the door and the woodwork when the door is closed to the bedroom. Anybody using the toilet can be seen through the small gap from a certain angle in the lounge area. Just two of us using the motorhome didn't find it necessary so used it without it. We never had guests or a family so not worth the expense of replacing it.

We had to have the same part replaced under warranty, if it is not fitted correctly it will split again and ours
only lasted 3 months. The dealer refused to replace it a second time so I rang Auto Trail and spoke to the
Warranty Manager he said the dealer would have fitted it incorrectly which stresses the plastic causing it to
fail. When I checked ours it was obvious that was what had caused it to split. In the picture you can see where
Spinney have fitted the flexing joint over a flat surface, the door frame which caused premature failure..
Unfortunately they claim this is their normal standard of work and wouldn't replace it.
Also whilst in the showroom I noticed they had a brand new Delaware and that was already split.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that unfortunately the"screen" is not fit for purpose. I've had two that were installed by Autotrail that have failed and one fitted by the dealer that also failed. We use our motorhome 25 - 30 weeks per year and it just would not stand the continual flexing. I'm sure anyone could make there own screen out of a suitable material. There could be a problem with aesthetics which would only be apparent from the toilet or the bedroom. You pays your money and takes your choice.

After giving the matter further thought I don't think the aesthetics would be a problem. A piece of fairly stiff material of the same dimensions as the original fitment could be fitted using the same fixing holes. With the door "across" the material would be stretched and therefore not any worse to look at than the original from the bedroom. With the door closed to the toilet the material would be rucked up but only visible whilst sitting facing the door. The rest of the time you would have your back to it. Or you could discard it like we did.

In the plastic industry it is called a live or living hinge. In it's life it can be flexed many times but that depends on temperature. Humidity eyc. Basicalky it is just a cheap plastic extrusion that does the job of a piano hinge. However, heat, expansion and contraction plays a big part on fixing the hinge to the wall/door. Autotrail stick them on and add a few screws. They eventually degrade i.e. the bendy bit breaks. Buy a piano hinge. Use stixall etc and as many short screws that you can and you will end up with a lasting solution.
