I have an Elddis mh and it has a ball and socket habitation door retainer as shown but when a gust of wind gets behind it, it keeps slamming shut. Do any of you ‘wise ones’ know of a suitable replacement, for the door retainer that is not the mh? Ideally it I should be able to release it while entering the vehicle as opposed to going behind the door and releasing from there.

I've just ordered one of these (but not the same model) from Brownhills parts department.

I just searched on eBay for "motorhome door retainer" and Brownhills parts department came up. My retainer looked different but I'm sure that they stock plenty of different models.

I recently changed my door retainer to the above, as the little round cylinder snapped off. Its the same type.

I wish there was a more "elegant" and better solution to this as I think its cheap and nasty (a bit like my elddis motorhome, so I suppose they match!)

Just drill a hole through retainer and ball.Slide in a drill bit .Works for us.

I've gone for a slightly higher tech solution than Janine, I use a bungy cord between the wing mirror and door handle :D
We used to do that with our coachbuilt hab door & it worked a treat - now we have a whoosh bang!

We used to do that with a bungy until a gust of wind took the door and the hook on the end could easily take your eye out be carful !

Had to relocate it down close to the door handle so it was easy to reach. The original stay was a ball and socket at the top of the door and was putting pressure on the top hinge so relocated it down to the middle of the door. The holes left by the original stay I just covered with a fridge magnet type sticker attached with sealent

I have a very high tech solution - a piece of string tied between the wing mirror and the door handle ?

Unfortunately not that simple. My hab door is the opposite end to the wing mirror and opens the opposite way. Nevertheless, thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks Vince, I’ll consider it as a possibility.

Slide something like a Alun key in the hole previously drilled .Goes through all components .No movement.

Yep - right up until you forget it and try to shut the door and break the catch. I think you can guess how I know this!

The retainers the OP has are rubbish, my van had them. I took it off and fitted one of these
midway down the hab door 4 years ago - works a treat - you have to flick the catch lever to release it, so it's good and secure even in high winds. As the catch is right on the edge of the door you do need to ensure your door can fold back close enough to the van wall, but it makes it very easy to flick it and shut the door behind you as you enter the van

Get rid of the ball clip type, some are better than others but with some that catch better than others you feel as though the side of the van will cave in. a waste of money irrespective where you purchase them ,fit a finger catch further down the door works a treat and lasts a long time. SORRY a bit slow do as above lol.

something
Thanks Mojo but I’ll resource a different solution.

That’s similar to a previous recommendation and it’s certainly worth me investigating this type of catch. Thanks

I have a Chausson 728 XLB and one of the few things on it that is strong is the Habitation door catch that holds the door open a 2 pieces of plastic , we had a Rapidoo in 2009 it was useless

I used one of these on my last Motorhome. Worked very well.

Me too!!!! The ones on Chausons don't last long the string does. We actually use a guy rope with a tensioner on it.

Our cheap, cheerful and effective remedy. Sucker and thin bungy cord.
Been on there over 2 years.

Try one of these if they are good enough for a Morelo then they are good enough for a Hymer.
