Simple question, should a Motorhome dealer, as a matter of course, carry out a proper habitation check on a van prior selling it? and are they by law obliged to do so?

They should if they are a decent dealer but Doubt there is a legal obligation on habitation although there is as far as the vehicle component is concerned.

There's no law requiring it and not necessarily a need to do a full hab check but they should be checking that it is safe and that stuff works.

The base vehicle should have a current MOT if it is of the age to need one, but not necessarily a new one.

I don’t think there is any legal obligation but, if I was looking to buy a motorhome with a few years on the clock, I would ask for a hab check and report as part of the deal. If the dealer refused I would walk away wondering what they were trying to hide.

Would you want a hab check done by the person/dealer selling it?

I wouldn’t. If you want a hab check done then I would have thought it better to be done by a independent specialist, that gives you the report.

Agreed, but the dealer may not be willing to let the vehicle go out to an independent. Having a Hab check report showing all is well could be useful in showing that the m/h was not as described in the event of trouble developing in the first few weeks,

Yep of course our guys round the back can handle a pen and we taught them to tick boxes last week. We have yet to teach them what the boxes mean but you will get a piece of paper with all the nice square boxes filled with a tick.

Which you could then produce in the event of a dispute.

Are you saying that you would refuse such a “proof” of habitation check if offered?

Anyone can only do so much to protect themselves from buying a dud. If you don’t want to take the extra step, don’t bother.
