Tonight I've seen the new Go.Compare adverts ... I thought at first it was a very late April Fools joke but it's not ... they have changed the name from GoCompare to Go.Compare (ie Go 'dot' Compare) and it really grates on me ... it's been done apparently to make it easier to get to their website etc but to me it seems very clumsy ... anyone else seen it?

I saw it last night, too, and wondered what the hell it was about. Seems a really stupid move to me. After annoying us for years with their irritating ads, they've managed to drill GoCompare into our heads pretty well. The excuse for starting the process all over again for the sake of a new name seems ridiculous.

We saw the new ad last night too and also wondered what the heck it was all about.

Seems a very strange and unnecessary move. I wonder how much all the rebranding has cost them

If you type in without the full stop it still takes you straight to Go.Compare.
I still type in Caravan Club and get taken to CAMC.
I Had a delivery via EVRI the other day and all the stickers and labels said Hermes.
My previous employer re-branded a couple of years ago, but most post regarding pension etc still refers to old name.
So I don't need to remember any of the new company names.

If you type gocompare in the address bar at the top of your browser it takes you to a search engine and from there you can select the site (if you want to). However if you type go.compare in the address bar it recognises it as a web address and takes you directly to the web site. They suggest this is for the convenience of customers but perhaps they don’t have to pay search fees and for search optimisation if you go via the direct route. Mmmm I wonder if customer convenience has anything to do with it or whether cutting out the middle man costs and avoiding you seeing other options in your search engine is the real reason.

It might just be a bit clever and perhaps others will follow?

It might do that because you have previously been to their site and the browser has remembered the rest of the address and adds in the . (stop) but if you take out everything except “gocompare” I found it takes me to the search facility not directly to the site.

The website address is still gocompare (without the dot) but the branding on the website is Go.compare.

So they've changed the name of the company so it is different to the website???

Maybe the change is some sort of security thing to stop nasty hackers

I’m no advertising expert however if it’s being discussed here it’s probably being discussed elsewhere, so probably worked?

No, because as I said above - the website address has not changed.

The destination is the same but the route there is different and cuts out the middle man. A bit like building a bypass around a town. Quicker and the town misses out on the passing trade.

Not sure it makes any difference to me. I tend to find any site by either typing the company name into the address bar -which triggers a Google search or brings up a previously used address or just search in Google.

Never use that one. Can’t stand the bloke who presents the ads. I much prefer a cuddly meerkat👍

It probably makes no difference to you but if you get to their site via a search engine they usually have to pay a charge known as PPC (Pay Per Click). The prominent positions on search engines cost money. There is a new industry around search optimisation.

If you run expensive tv ads you want the customers to reach your site without being distracted by others ads. When I enter GoCompare without the dot it takes me to a Google search page and the next link down from GoCompare is Confused. There is a good chance that some of the customers looking for insurance will try both sites, so some of your advertising is helping your main competitor too. On top of which it is costing you money for the ad alongside the search result because otherwise your competitor will buy that slot and probably sweep up most of the potential customers. That dot in their name could save them a lot of money.

I expect Google will be looking for a way to overcome this.

The reason why is all in the link I posted, trouble is we all know it a GoCompare so it'll still be referred to as that but we need to remember to go a bit dotty as well when wanting to go to their site ... it just sounds weird on the adverts that's all.

Jim - better get buying up the dotty Motorhome.fun domain names! :giggle:
