I’m making a quick dash down to Austria for a weeks skiing and want to know if I can stopover and sleep on the German autobahn service stations? We intend to drive until around midnight on the first day after a late afternoon crossing, so want to just pull up at a service station and sleep. Can‘t leave any earlier due to mates work commitments.

I always have done.& when you wake up yopu can go in for breakfast any hour of the night & for 3€ use the shower facilities. That's both of you as they are a standalone shower room.

Have used the facilities at the German service stations and they are spotless, you can also get some half decent meals at some of them.
Not stayed overnight though.

Do you have route planned - I would be interested in a fast route to Austria

Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful.
Route I’m planning is starting from Calais - Metz - Saarbrucken - Karlsruhe - Stuttgart - Memmingen - and cross the border near Lindau/Bregenz.

Even the toilet facilities on the motorway pull overs are spotless, witnessing a clean team arrive and clean them is a spectacle to witness. The team arrives in a truck they use a pressure washer to clean inside- re stock with soap and loo paper jump back in the van and then off to the next destination.

What is the level of security at autobahn service areas?

Better than at French and Spanish, which a lot of threads warn to avoid?

Geoff
Ones we have stopped in to fuel up or have a cuppa at are just big car parks at the rear so no sort of security, plus there is dozens of trucks parked up with you🙁

Thanks for all the feedback folks. I was planning to use the service stations rather than the stellplatze as I didn’t want to disturb anyone at midnight, but will see how it goes 😁

That's nice to hear, I get peed off with the amount of people on here who think it's alright to pull into an Aire late at night after their ferry crossing waking everyone totally ignoring the 10pm rule.

Have you considered tolls. Class2 from calais to metz is about €60 class 3 is going to be about 90. For this reason many of us go via Belgium and Luxembourg ( and then fill up at 50% less than France)

Have travelled via Belgium/Luxembourg before, but not sure of covid requirements for transit through these countries, trying to minimise the number of passenger locator forms we have to fill out!
