Gaining oil in the sump

The oil level in our 1992 544 Hymer Fiat 2.5 Diesel is increasing after a recent oil and filter change. I can only assume that it must be diesel entering the sump via a leak in the injector system. It is only a guess so am asking if anyone else has had a problem like this. Also, can anyone recommend a diesel specialist. We live in North Hertfordshire but would travel if positive experience has been found by any Motorhomefun members.

The vehicle performs brilliantly by the way. Good starter, economical no other indications of problems but I can't ignore this.

1. did you check the level after the change and its gone up or has just too much been put in initially??
2. what mileage have you done since the change???

it is not uncommon for diesel engines to put a little fuel into the oil especially on short stop start journeys as they generally dont get hot enough to burn it off in this use.

The only experience I've had of this was when a head gasket was blown and water was getting into the oil ... if that is the problem you will also see a drop in the radiator level ..

And maybe??? some foam collecting in the breather pipe???

Presuming water levels are ok if it has dropped remove rocker box filler and check for emulsified oil build up. Was the oil level correct after the service! diesel fuel leakage into small modern diesel sumps is rare and needs to be checked out. Doe's the oil feel thin (ie not sticky on dipstick when cold?) and does it smell of fuel.

If it is fuel it needs sorting pronto loss of viscosity due to fuel dilution will result in major engine failure.

But how much ?

For how long ?

Does the oil look "normal" ?


How about sludge blocking the dip stick orifice. You fill by dip stick but oil is seeping into it very slowly so massively over filled and continues to rise.

You cannot GAIN oil in the sump you can however increase the level by water contamination or fuel should be easy to tell which it is

common on older transits where the lift pump was just under the exhaust down the right hand side of the engine looking at it from the front.

1. Yes checked after the change, level correct.
2. 1200 miles aprox on a week away.

I can smell diesel on the dip stick & can see slight dilution.

No water present I am pleased to say.

Yep it smells of diesel & I can see that it is diluted so viscosity is less. I agree that this could result in major engine failure if ignored. I am looking into using A.W. Diesel Services Ltd in MK if you or anyone has used them before I would be glad to hear of experience.

Thank you all for your comments regarding this problem. I found a diesel specialist A.W. Diesel Services Ltd in MK. They identified that the lower diaphragm in the fuel pump had a small crack in it which could explain things. With that repaired with a fuel pump service kit I am hoping that this will prove to be the answer. Dip stick reading after the trip to MK looked good but the real test will come after a longer journey.

There are some issues with the new diesel engines and latest tolerances that can be achieved. They are so small now that even the smallest spec can block an injector from spraying in the correct pattern. This can lead to the said injector washing the cylinder wall which in turn can lead to the piston pickin up.

So it is very important that any increase in engine oil that is spotted is investigated straight away or as soon as possible.

Thanks Jay, this is just what it turned out to be, a small leak in the diaphragm. After a couple of long runs the dip stick is giving stable readings. I am chuffed to bits with the company for spotting this. I used A.W. Diesel Services Ltd of MK. This company were easy to talk to and charged very reasonable rates. I used a diesel specialist for this job at the recommendation of members of this site so thank you all once again.
