Anyone got any ideas on fuel stops North of Fort William? I think the last supermarket fuel is in Fort William.
Doesn't have to be Supermarket fuel, we are probably sticking to the West coast going up as far as Gairloch or maybe Ullapool.

It will depend on your route north, but very limited, where you do find it expect to pay well over the odds.

But even if you go a very long way round it will not be 200 miles from FW to Ullapool, so not really an issue

Great drive though, have fun :)

We topped up at Inverness Tesco and went to Ullapool Durness Dunnet bay John g'roats and refilled at Wick with more than a quarter tank left. Set off full and no danger of running short (y)

Fuel stops are few and far between once you are off the beaten track. I would suggest that if you see a filling station and are about half tank then fill up :)

You will be okay in bigger places such as Thurso and Wick (although it could be more expensive than you are used to). There is a filling station at Broadford on Skye and a couple of filling stations in Stornoway on Lewis plus others in smaller places but seeing a pump does not mean they still sell road fuel.

You will also be okay in Inverness :) Just do as the locals and be aware of the tank (full or emptyness) and take your opportunities where you can.

This website can tell you where there are fuel stations. http://www.whatgas.com/petrol-prices/nearest-petrol.html#.VbUOU_lVhBc
Just zoom out on the map then slide it up to Scotland. The search facility doesn't seem to work but you can see the garages OK on the map. Click on a flag and it gives prices. Not sure how up to date they are though.

I use the "what gas petrol prices" app. Shows where the nearest fuel stations are and if you are lucky, the fuel prices. Works for me.

There is a Tesco at Tain which sells fuel. The cheapest we found was the c0-op just as you go onto Sky. We travelled from home up to Dunnet Head, across the top and then down the west side and did not find fuel an issue although some were more expensive than others, however the scenery more than made up for any extra cost.

There are plenty of places to fill up in the small towns but don't let the tank get low if you are venturing into the real wild areas. Not many supermarkets with fuel stations though.
Petrol stations at the following come to mind:
  • Shiel Bridge
  • Lochcarron
  • Gairloch
  • Poolewe
  • Ullapool (of course)
  • Lairg (I think)

Thanks all for the replies,

couple of good sites to know there. Appreciate the prices will be different, not a lot you can do about it ....

like the weather and midges .... just got to live with it and it won't spoil the FUN:D

The diesel was cheaper in Thurso than it is down in the Borders!

There are plenty of filling stations North of FW. We tour the Highlands every year on Motorbikes (one of which only gets 120 miles to the tank) never had a problem yet.

got back today, great trip, none or very few midges and dry until we got back down to Exmoor, fuel wise, no worries as plenty available as far as Skye+ and the cheapest we saw (after topping up of course) was in Fort W and that's before, during and on the way back down.
