Thanks.

Prohibited for sailing on or launching from ?
Ok for bus parking(y)

We thought it referred to the travelling community (full timers) but were unsure as we only wanted to overnight.
In the end we stayed elsewhere.

Thanks for the replies

As said, 'Gens de voyage' are itinerants, not holidaymakers.

Its a bus parking space or place!

I think what it really means is No Parking for for people travelling or en route . This would include Motorhomes and Holidaymakers. I would not interpret the sign as applying to the British definition of Travellers which of course would be discriminatory. Sounds more like a ban on Wilding here.

Just my interpretation!

Gens de voyage does have a specific meaning in French, itinerant travellers, there are many sites near our static in France reserved for 'Gens de Voyage'.......they are not aires.

there actually are lots of places just for gens de voyage folk in france. in uk they dont seem to be abiding by the rules and are cutting back the gens de voyage sites .
some real nice folk on the french ones and quite a few in spain as well.

Hi.
So much for all your French Language lessons......... It means.

"Wash your single decker buses here !" Mange tout rodney..Mange Tout

Tea Bag "Avez vous Cuppa ?" (y)

Gens du voyage is the polite way to say "Gypsies"!
They have devoted aires called " Aire de Grand Passage"
But they do prefer my stadium, full of green grass , free water, free electricity.
Last time they even put on the gate.

"FULL we don't take anymore caravans"

Yeah right! 250 caravans + as many cars/vans to pull them.

You've just got to love them. They are one constant no matter where one travels, in general, dirty filthy people with little or no respect for their surroundings or neighbours. Paying no taxes seems to mean they can have excellent caravans and vehicles ... a French friend suggested that they even receive assistance to buy their caravans.

The sign was at La Madeleine Bouvet which we got out of All the Aires
And park4night just couldn't make our minds up if we could or couldn't overnight :( so we moved on (y)

I don't know about the last bit, but they are certainly on the increase out here. They buy or rent a cheap derelict farm property and fill the surface area with as many caravans as they can. All top quality Fendt and the like with new Merc' panel vans. No visible means of income and nobody seems to enforce the planning laws that forbid the use of caravans to live in except with permission from the Maire in certain circumstances such as short term living while you build a house.

We stayed there a year or so ago. Looked at the sign and couldn't quite decide what was meant so, being in France, decided that the rule didn't apply to us. After all, most French seem to take rules as approximate guidance only.
Very nice little aire beside the lake. It was really hot when we were there.

It refers to gypsies or " manouche " which is the French derogatory term for them.

I asked my French cousin how she would translate the sign, she said "It means no Itinerants!" :D

[edit] That wasn't what I typed! What I typed was an abbreviation from old English meaning someone who looks after a turnpike road! :D

To resurrect an old thread. There are no signs here anymore but they do have toilets and fresh water. Even an electric point but not sure how that works as it's on the water thingy and costs a Euro.

Also a lovely pizza van in the village. Just us and one French van here.
