French breathalyser, needed?

Sorry ... no it was for YOU to test your level of alcohol before taking your car and drive. The Police has always used theirs . BTW now you need not to blow anymore in the stuff, you just count up to 10 in front of it. I was tested about a month ago with the new kit
How does that work?

Does it sample your breath as you speak?

I have lived in France for 20 years. Before I retired I drove a white van averaging 130K Kilometers each year driving all over France. I lost count how many times I have been stopped for a control check up. Never have I ever been asked to show a Breathalyzer kit. Or a first aid kit or even a spare set of light bulbs.

I'd like to know but they were in a hurry , lots of cars were waiting behind me. They just asked have you been drinking alcohol ? I said no, I don't drink. Then had to count , and then thank you Madame , have a good night!

Australia have been using this kit for years, the roadside test has and always will be an indicator as to intoxication levels.
Essentially as you speak the device analyses the alcohol content in the breath, it doesn't need to be accurate, just close.

Are you

It’s just because if you get stopped by the French police and don’t have one, I
How would they know as they have no right to enter the vehicle ?
It was both ridiculous from the motorists viewpoint and, simultaneously, brilliant from the manufactures viewpoint.

You had to ensure you had a usable breathalyser with you at all times. The Police could then use it to check your alcohol level.

That meant that, if you had been stopped and checked by the Police, you would no longer have a usable one available so you had to carry two.

Brilliant marketing ploy.

Now, if on your way home after one check you were stopped again, you would have needed to be carrying a third one to comply with the regulation.

No wonder it was classed as unworkable and abandoned.

Vive la France.:france:

No, they couldn't ask you to use it as they would then have been committing a criminal offence by asking you to & leaving you without one.
There was no legal requirement for you to carry any more than one, which was the main problem.

even if they had made it legal to cary 2 or 6 as soon as they asked they were committing an offence by leaving you without the legal requirement.

Yesbut it is another that does not work if you do it whilst breathing in.

The device is a just an empty case.
The cop only wants to check that you are sober enough to manage to count up to ten.
Similar thing to back in the day when you were asked to walk along a white line in the road, but they can't do that now due to the risk of you getting run over by a drunk driver or one on their mobile phone.
