Morning all,

On our way to Portugal at the minute, the motorhome has started playing up. After a long run, and on switching engine off it won't start again until its cooled down, won't even turn over, just a clicking sound from ignition. First noticed this after we stopped at services to fill up, was stuck for over a hour at the pumps, they weren't very happy.

Happened again just outside our stopover for the night, which was by pure luck, contacted the breakdown we have, but they could not attend till the next day which i thought was very poor.

Noticed the foot brake was rock solid, did some homework, checked and topped up adblu, it was low but not had a warning light show on dash.

The van fired up thought that the problem was solved, stayed at the stopover, then continued yesterday to Portugal. After 4 hrs driving stopped at services, it did it again. After 2 hrs, and trying to contact breakdown to no avail!!, it fired up and we are now on a site weighing up what to do.

The trick is to keep theengine going till parked up, but i can't keep doing this for the next few weeks.

Would appreciate if anybody has suffered same problem could help.

Dave.

Check Earth connection for battery and starter motor. Far less likely in modern vehicle but heat/start/stop issues can be linked to a bad earth.

Sounds like a sensor problem I'd try to get to a Fiat garage for a diagnostic check. All the breakdown will do is take you to the nearest garage really needs to be a Fiat garage.

I agree with Lenny. Sounds like a sensor fault. I carry a cheap £10 Bluetooth ODB2 scanner in the glovebox so I can identify (but not necessarily always fix) faults.

One of the dozens of "China Bazaar" junk shops that seem to be all over Portugal might have one amongst the fake Crocs and dodgy phone chargers!

.......won't even turn over, just a clicking sound from ignition.
Is the clicking sound coming from behind the dashboard/at the ignition switch, or further down/in the engine bay?

Derbyshire wanderer reminded me that I meant to add that I had a similar problem that when the starter heated from the general heat from the engine I just had clicks from the solenoid on the starter motor. The heat had caused a connection in or at the starter to go open circuit. A new starter cured the problem.

If you're capable, check the connections on the starter motor and try and park on hills/slopes when you stop.

Another idea. It could be the cam-shaft sensor. Usually a dodgy connector that vibrates, overheats and stops the sensor working. If van wont start when hot, locate the sensor and spray it with some cold gas - dust away or similar. If it then starts, that would indicate the problem.

Hello again, checked all earth connections then went to battery, low and behold clamp was loose on negative lug.

Its just had an immobiliser fitted I will say no more.

Hopefully will have sorted the problem.

A second question, were at a site in Evoramonte and working our way to the Algarve on the West coast, can anybody suggest a site between Lisbon and Albfeira for a few days.

Regards

Dave
