One of the problems with the LDV convoy is the long drop from the roof to the side gutter. I haven't been able to find a set of roof bars, and one guy quoted £1,500 to make a set. This guy seems to have extended a Transit set for use on an LDV. What do you think of the idea? Do you think that it is safe?

Given the extra height, would you add a side strap to give them a bit more rigidity?

Thanks for the link. I did have a look, but I don't think they have anything with long enough legs. It's 20 or 30 cms longer than the longest transit they sell.
I need to decide if I really need a roof rack. I've got a big top box that I could use, and I want to add some solar panels. Another use would be as a platform for photography.

I'm still undecided about the sense in adding a roof rack to a high top van. I don;t travel faster than 55/60 mph, so fuel economy is probably not a major consideration. Getting upto the rack is more important. I'm nit sure I want external ladders. I guess I need to do some research into double sided or tilting solar panels to see if the extra benefits are worth it.

It seems a reasonable method of extending . The only additions would be to use a strip of 1"x 1/4 flat on edge welded to join all the feet and spread the load in the gutters (this is an old aussie trick, to stop gutter point loads hammering the guttering down) and then a strip from that to triangulate the posts and prevent front rear flexing . Hope that makes sense. :)

Thanks for that advice. It looks like a good idea if I am going to include a platform for use when taking photographs.
