Engine management light

Completely doing my head in now. Drove away from Morrisons and for the first time in 4 weeks the light has not come on and the lumpiness when revving hard is not there. Let's see what tomorrow brings :oops2:

I assume you are turning the engine light off each time?
Nothing to loose shoving a load of carb cleaner into TB and work it to make sure it’s not sticking.

No just doing it on its own. Every time I turn it off it comes back on in about 30 seconds or less.

Just googled carb cleaner! Didn't know there was a whole industry I knew nothing about. Any recommendations from anyone. Anything that may work without taking everything to bits. Are they safe for diesels?

Well it lasted all of two miles light now back on

That sounds very reasonable and probably same engine as mine. Will have to see what local garage want.

Landy Andy

Just had a look at this and it says left hand drive only. Why would they be different.
Looking to take pipe off to have a look at flap. Did you mean the 3" flexible pipe or the small stainless steel one on the other side?
Flexible one.

Landy Andy
Sorry to bother you again I've removed the pipe and the flap seems to move quite well with a reasonable amount of resistance from the spring.i have tried rev ing it but it stays open. If i force it shut by hand the engine tries to stall.
Does it need revving more or do you think the valve is stuck open and not receiving the signal to close?
Hope you can help
Dennis

Ps it doesn't look carboned up in there but I was surprised to get my fingers covered in oil?

Normally once engine has some warmth in it a HARD rev, then release of throttle will make the ECU open the EGR, and close the throttle body.
Or when you turn engine off, the throttle body will shut (if operating) and stay shut for 1minuet. This is probably the easiest way to see if it is operating. You will obviously need the intercooler hose off to see it, and on the “rev test” the pipe can blow off if hose clip is too loose.

Any problems ask, or I can give you my phone number 👍🏻

The carboning happens further in. The oil is normal and is just from the engine breather system. It’s when that oil, and then the soot from the EGR combine that it causes problems.

So it needs to be warm and the hose on then whip off quickly to see? Will it not work with hose off? Message me your phone number if you really don't mind
thanks

It doesn’t need to be warm, or hose on for the shut down close test,

This is the newer version of a TB. You can also see the bolt (hex head) in the pic where the newer version can be taken apart. Unlike the old version.

Pic showing new and old style TB’s next to each other and a picture of old style one fitted to an engine.

Tried with my Mrs revving again nearly had my fingers off. Flap is constantly opening fully and closing about 3/4 before opening again. Decided to get it changed as obviously not right. Reversed a few feet as had dropped one of the air filter screws and would you believe it light went out!
Mine is the same as your second picture but seems the newer one would make sense if it is always the valve that breaks. Think them bolts would be less likely to snap as not so hot away from the engine block.

Quick get the MOT done whilst light is off 👍🏻

I got to the point that I had to remove it to know what was going on, and if removing it, then I might as well get the newer “better” version. That was the best choice for me in the end as it then proved my EGR was stuck open permanently.

Well lasted all of a mile before light returning. So I am going to have to change the throttle body anyway so I thought could I drtill a hole in the top and put a long self tapper in to hold the flap permanently open. Could it do any harm? Would it sort the fault light? What angle open?
What do you think Landy Andy ?

If you want to keep it in one place then that would have be fully open. But remember drilling into the TB will introduce swarf into the air intake system of the engine. Personally I wouldn’t bother.

Booked into the normally friendly garage three weeks ago for this morning for throttle body to be investigated and probably changed and for mot. Get a phone call at 3pm saying needs to be changed can't get one or fit it till next week. Say they have not booked it for mot. Runs out tomorrow! Can't mot it with light on says I. Light is not on now says garage. Mot it now says I. It passed. Mechanic said he had moved van 5 times and light off each time. I collected it turned key and yes light back on.
So as I now have an mot do I still need to pay them £636.00 (Inc vat) to change it. Or do I just drive it for another 12 months with the light on?

Ours has been on for the last five years. Fiat professional are absolute crap! I take it in for an mot , they fail it, turn the light off and then pass it. But they can't fix the bloody thing. AARRGGHH!!!
